Subject
IDLE SPEED CONTROL ACTUATOR (SHOP MANUAL CORRECTION)
DESCRIPTION:
The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) in 1996 & 1997 Sonatas does not provide Idle Speed Control (ISC) actuator information to the Scan Tool.
The 1996 & 97 Sonata Shop Manuals incorrectly state that the ISC actuator information can be read by the Scan Tool. Please disregard the published pages shown.
CIRCUIT OPERATION:
The PCM checks the operation of the ISC actuator and will set a diagnostic trouble code (P0505 - Idle Speed Actuator Malfunction) if a malfunction of the system is detected. A diagnostic trouble code will set if the actual engine idle speed is 300 rpm higher than the PCM target idle speed, or 120 rpm less than the PCM target idle speed. The target idle speed is pre-determined by the operating conditions and sensor readings. The Harness Inspection Procedures, Actuator Inspection, and Operation Check can be performed as described in the Shop Manual.
PCM COMMAND VERIFICATION:
HDS can be used to verify that the PCM is sending commands to the idle actuator.
^ Using HDS Signal Wave Forms, select the Idle Speed Control Signal (ISCS) A4, A5, A17, and A18 and monitor the signals.
^ At idle, there will be battery voltage present at two of the pins, and no voltage at the other two.
^ When the steering wheel is turned (or other load applied) the signals will look similar to the figure shown.
