Crankshaft: Service and Repair
REMOVAL
1. Remove the engine and then the following components:
a. The front case as described under Front Engine Plate.
b. The transaxle and flywheel or flex plate as equipped.
c. The cylinder head assembly if piston/connecting rod assemblies are to be removed.
2. Remove the rear plate and the rear oil seal and oil seal case.
3. Remove the connecting rod caps.
NOTE: If piston/connecting rod assemblies are not to be removed, push them down until they will not interfere with crank removal.
4. Mark the main bearing caps to permit reassembly in the original position and direction.
5. Remove the main bearing caps and remove the crankshaft. Keep the bearings in order by cap number
INSTALLATION
1. Install crankshaft. Apply engine oil to journal and pin.
2. Install caps with arrow mark directed toward front of engine. Cap number must be correct.
3. Using a sequence of center cap, No.2 cap, No.4 cap, front cap and rear cap, tighten main bearing cap bolts to 65-70 Nm (650-700 kg. cm, 47-51 ft. lbs.).
NOTE: Cap bolts should be tightened evenly in 4 to 5 stages before they are tightened to specified torque.
4. Make certain that crankshaft turns freely and has proper end play as shown in the illustration.
Specification;
Standard Value, 0.05-0.18 mm (0.0020-0.0071 inch).
Wear Limit, 0.25 mm (0.0098 inch)
5. Install the oil separator and rear oil seal case using a new oil seal case gasket, tighten bolts to 10-12 Nm (100-120 kg. cm, 7-9 ft. lbs.).
6. Install the rear plate to the cylinder block.
7. Install the flywheel or drive plate assembly and tighten the bolts to 130-140 Nm (1,300-1,400 kg. cm, 94-101 ft. lbs.).
8. Install rod bearing, cap and nuts, then tighten nuts to 50-53 Nm (500-530 kg. cm, 36-38 ft. lbs.).
9. Install oil pan, front case, cylinder head and timing belt as outlined.
