Group: CHASSIS

Number: 99-50-004

Date: APRIL, 1999

Model: 1999 SONATA

Subject
1999 SONATA FRONT WHEEL BEARING NOISE

DESCRIPTION:

Some 1999 Sonata vehicles produced through January 8, 1999, may emit a noise from the front wheel bearings. This noise may be characterized as a humming tire noise similar to snow tires. The noise is generally loudest at a slow to medium road speed (30 to 50 MPH), and can usually be isolated to the right or left front wheel bearing during the vehicle road test as follows:

Road test the vehicle on a smooth road at medium speed (about 40 MPH) at part throttle. Changing engine speed or throttle position should have no effect on the noise.

^ It the vehicle makes noise during right turns, the left front wheel bearing may need to be replaced.

^ If the vehicle makes noise during the left turns, the right front wheel bearing may need to be replaced.

^ If the front wheel bearing noise is heard on either right, left or straight ahead, the front wheel bearing assembly on the side with the most noise should be replaced.

^ This condition may be confirmed with the vehicle on a hoist using a mechanics stethoscope.

Vehicles produced after January 8, 1999, have been assembled with a new specification wheel bearing grease.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

Replace the incident front wheel bearing per the procedure outlined in the 1999 Sonata Shop Manual.
