DESCRIPTION:

The automatic transaxle shift interlock and ignition key interlock mechanisms are operated by cables on the following vehicles: 1999-2001 Sonata, 2001 Elantra, 2001 Santa Fe and 2001 XG300. The cables must be correctly adjusted for proper operation of the shift interlock and key interlock.

Follow the adjustment procedures below. If the vehicle exhibits either of the following conditions:

1. The key cannot be removed from the key cylinder after shifting into "Park".

2. The shift lever cannot be shifted from "Park" with the ignition key on and the brake pedal depressed.

PROCEDURE:

1. Access the base of the shifter by removing the necessary trim.

NOTE:
See the shop manual for the specified model being serviced for details.

KEY LOCK CABLE ADJUSTMENT:

1. Place the shift lever in the "Park" position.

2. Loosen the 12 mm nut securing the key lock cable mounting bracket. Check the cable mounting bracket to make sure it moves freely.

3. Push the cable housing lightly forward with your finger (as shown) to remove slack in the cable.

4. Tighten the 12 mm nut.

5. Confirm the key can be removed when the shift lever is moved to the "Park" position.

NOTE:
If the key cannot be removed, refer to the shop manual as shown. Repair or replace the key lock cable or ignition switch.

SHIFT LOCK CABLE ADJUSTMENT:

1. Turn the ignition key to the "On" position.

2. Depress the brake pedal.

3. Measure the clearance between the park lock cam and key lock cam. If the clearance is not 2-4 mm (0.08-0.16 inch), go to step 4.

4. Loosen the 12 mm nut securing the shift interlock cable.

5. Move the shift lock cable mount until the clearance between the park lock cam and key lock cam is 2-4 mm (0.08-0.16 inch).

6. Tighten the 12 mm nut.

7. Confirm the shift lever can be moved from the "Park" position when the ignition key is turned to the "On" position and the brake pedal is depressed.

NOTE:
If the shift lever cannot be moved from the park position, refer to the shop manual as shown. Repair or replace the shift lock cable and shifter lever assembly.
