ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURES
This bulletin is issued to inform you of the adjustment procedures for the cable operated Key Interlock and the A/T Shift Interlock mechanisms in 1999 Sonata EF's.
If the key cannot be removed from the key cylinder after shifting into "Park" or the the shift lever cannot be shifted from "Park" with the ignition "On" and the brake pedal depressed, follow the adjustment procedures below.
KEY INTERLOCK
The Key Interlock mechanism is controlled by a cable that connects the ignition switch to the Key Interlock mechanism, located with the A/T Shift Lock mechanism at the base of the A/T Shift Lever.
Adjustment Procedure:
1. Place the Shift Lever in the "Park" position with the key in the ignition.
2. Loosen the M8 12 mm mounting nut that secures the Key Lock Cable mounting bracket.
3. Gently push the Key Lock Cable housing forward (toward the front of the car) to remove any slack in the cable.
4. Tighten the M8 12 mm mounting nut.
5. Check that the key can be removed from the ignition when the shift lever is in the "Park" position only.
A/T SHIFT INTERLOCK
The Shift Interlock mechanism is controlled by a cable that connects the brake pedal to the Shift Interlock mechanism located with the Key Interlock mechanism at the base of the A/T Shift Lever Adjustment Procedure:
1. Turn the ignition key to the "On" position.
2. Depress the brake pedal.
3. Looking down from directly above the two mechanisms, measure the clearance between the Key Lock Cam and the Shift Lock Cam.
Clearance Specification: 2 ~ 4 mm
4. If the clearance is not within specification, loosen the M8 12 mm mounting nut that secures the Shift Lock Cable.
5. Gently move the Shift Lock Cable mount until the clearance between the two cam mechanisms are within the specified clearance.
6. Tighten the M8 12 mm mounting nut.
7. Check that the shift lever can be moved out of the "Park" position when the ignition key is in the "On" position and the brake pedal is depressed.
