1999-2001 SONATA AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE FINAL DRIVE GEAR WHINING NOISE
DESCRIPTION
Some 1999-2001 Sonata vehicles' automatic transaxles may transmit a whining noise through the transaxle shift cable when accelerating or decelerating at light throttle or driving at a steady speed at 25-40 mph.
This bulletin provides a procedure for installation of a mass damper on the automatic transaxle shift cable to minimize noise that may be transmitted through the shift cable.
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
1. Record the customer's radio stations. Disconnect the battery cables and remove the battery.
2 Disconnect the PCV hose for the air intake air duct.
3. Loosen the air intake duct mounting clamps on the throttle body and air cleaner. Move the air intake duct out of the way on the strut.
4. Remove the air cleaner cover. Remove the three bolts securing the air cleaner and remove the air cleaner.
5. Attach the mass damper to the shift cable approximately 8 inches from the shift cable bracket and tighten the 4 bolts to approximately 12 lb.in securely using a hex wrench.
NOTE:
If the mass damper is installed too tightly, the shift lever may not move freely.
6. After installing the mass damper, use tie-wrap to secure the throttle cable to the rear 02 sensor bracket on the engine block directly above the cable to control movement of the cable.
7. Reinstall the air cleaner and air intake duct.
8. Reconnect the PCV hose.
9. Reinstall the mounting clamps on the throttle body and air cleaner.
10. Reinstall the battery.
11. Reset the customer's radio stations.
12. Test drive the vehicle and check for a whining noise from the transaxle. If the noise level is similar to other 1999 - 2001 Sonata vehicles, return the vehicle to the customer.
