Procedure





1. Use a plastic trim tool to release the front tabs of the center console switch cover and lift up the cover. If the vehicle is equipped with a traction control system (TCS), disconnect the TCS switch connector.





2. Remove the two screws under the center console switch plate.





3. Using a plastic trim tool, loosen the three rear metal clips securing the center console trim and remove the trim. Disconnect the power outlet connector.

KEY LOCK CABLE ADJUSTMENT:

1. Place the shift lever in the "Park" position.





2. Loosen the 12 mm nut securing the key lock cable mounting bracket. Check the cable mounting bracket to make sure it moves freely.

3. Push the cable housing lightly forward with your finger (as shown) to remove slack in the cable.

4. Tighten the 12 mm nut.

5. Confirm the key can be removed when the shift lever is moved to the "Park" position.

NOTE: If the key cannot be removed, please refer to pages AT-79 to AT-83 of the 1999 Sonata Shop Manual. Repair or replace the key lock cable or ignition switch.

SHIFT LOCK CABLE ADJUSTMENT:

1. Turn the ignition key to the "On" position.

2. Depress the brake pedal.





3. Measure the clearance between the park lock cam and key lock cam. If the clearance is not 2-4 mm (0.08-0.16 inch), go to step 4.

4. Loosen the 12 mm nut securing the shift interlock cable.

5. Move the shift lock cable mount until the clearance between the park lock cam and key lock cam is 2-4 mm (0.08-0.16 inch).

6. Tighten the 12 mm nut.

7. Confirm the shift lever can be moved from the "Park" position when the ignition key is turned to the "On" position and the brake pedal is depressed.

NOTE: If the shift lever cannot be moved from the park position, please refer to pages AT-79 to AT-83 of the 1999 Sonata Shop Manual. Repair or replace the shift lock cable and shiftier lever assembly.
