DM-TL DIAGNOSIS:
DTC'S P1401, P1402, P1403

The 2000 and 2001 MY Accents are equipped with an enhanced Evaporative Emission Control System that is capable of detecting leaks as small as 0.5 mm (0.020") diameter. The system pressurizes the Evaporative Emission Control System with a Diagnostic Module for Tank Leakage (DM-TL), whereas, the previous model's system applied engine vacuum via the Purge Control Valve to detect system leaks using the Fuel Tank Pressure sensor.

Vehicles that have the Check Engine Light illuminated and have DTC P1401, P1402, and P1403 stored in the ECM should have their electrical systems diagnosed related to the appropriate DTC. These codes are not related, in any way, to an Evaporative Emission Control System leak. The conditions that may set these diagnostic codes are:

^ P1401 - DM-TL air pump motor current draw is higher or lower than expected (normal = 17-36 mA).

^ P1402 - DM-TL air pump motor is shorted or disconnected.

^ P1403 - DM-TL changeover valve is shorted or disconnected.

DIAGNOSTIC TIPS:

Diagnose for the conditions listed below and perform the suggested repair.

1. Inspect for water in the DMTL by removing the 90° air inlet elbow and looking into the air chamber. If water or corrosion is present, replace the DM-TL P/N 31440-25500; air filter P/N 31453-25500; and pipe assembly P/N 31454-25500. See instructions for the DM-TL Air Filter Replacement in this TSB.

2. Inspect for undercoating that may have been sprayed into connector M52 at the DM-TL. If undercoating is noticed on either the male or the female connector, spray with electrical contact cleaner to remove the undercoating.

DM-TL AIR FILTER REPLACEMENT:

1. Disconnect the 900 elbow from the top of the DM-TL and insert a clean rag into either the elbow or the DM-TL inlet connector.

2. Disconnect the DM-TL electrical connector.

3. Disconnect the 2 hoses at the front of the charcoal canister. (Caution: silicone hoses can tear and/or puncture easily).

4. Remove charcoal canister assembly and the DM-TL as a unit (3 mounting nuts).

5. Disconnect the 2 hoses from the metal transfer pipes.

6. Remove the charcoal canister, air filter, and metal tube assembly from the charcoal canister protector by removing the 3 mounting nuts.

7. Disconnect the hose at the air filter.

8. Remove the air filter mounting nut and remove the air filter.

9. Install a new air filter.

10. Reassemble in the reverse order.
