Service Procedure
NOTES:^ Verity that this procedure applies to the vehicle by identifying the vehicle production date and VIN.
^ This replacement procedure applies to both left and right rear doors. Repair both doors at the same time.
1. If the rear door will not open, allow the latch and cable to thaw out, then remove the inside door handle bezel and use needle nose pliers to feed the lower cable back into its gray housing. Next, cycle the lock a few times by locking and unlocking the door to free up the latch mechanism.
2. When the rear door will open, turn the ignition key on and raise the rear door glass if not already raised.
3. Remove the rear door inside handle bezel if not already removed in step 1.
4. Remove the four (4) mounting screws from the door trim panel. Then use a trim panel release tool to free the clips from the bottom of the door panel, and remove the door panel.
NOTE:
When removing and installing the door trim and inside handle housing, be careful not to scratch or damage the surfaces.
5. Carefully remove the door trim seal.
CAUTION:
The door trim seal must be intact. Any tears or damage will result in water leaks, which could lead to door trim panel damage as well as water in the interior. Replace the door trim seal if it tears or is otherwise damaged.
Door Trim Seal P/Ns:
Left Hand Door: P/N 83391-29010
Right Hand Door: P/N 83392-29010
6. Remove the rear door division channel lower mounting bolt.
7. Remove the inside door handle cable and safety lock cable from the inside door handle retainer.
8. Release the cable's from the inside handle assembly.
9. Remove the two (2) mounting clips that hold the rear door inside cable and safety lock cable.
NOTE:
Discard the clips.
10. Remove the outside door handle rod from the rear door outside handle.
11. Remove the rear door latch mounting screws (3 each).
12. Slide the door latch and actuator retainer forward while pressing on the tabs to detach them from the regulator panel.
13. Remove the electrical connector to the door latch and actuator.
14. Remove the door latch and actuator assembly from the door. Carefully twist the division channel and pull the door latch down and forward until it clears the division channel, then remove it from the door.
15. Remove the door latch cover from the rear door latch and actuator assembly.
16. Remove the rear door inside handle cable and the safety lock cable from the rear door latch.
17. Remove the rear door latch and actuator retainer mounting screws (2 each) and then remove the retainer from the rear door latch.
18. Replace the rod clips with new parts. (See parts list)
19. Replace the inside handle cable and safety lock cable with new parts. (See parts list)
20. Replace the rear door latch and actuator retainer with a new part.
NOTE:
(Reuse the rear door latch retainer mounting screws (2 each) removed in step 17).
21. Attach the inside handle cable and the safety lock cable bushings to the new retainer.
22. Install the new module cable cover onto the retainer.
23. Install the new door latch cover onto the door latch by matching protrusions and grooves (2 points) as indicated in photo.
24. Install the module cable cover and door latch cover using the supplied self tapping screw.
25. Install the door latch and actuator into the door. Carefully twist the division channel to get enough clearance.
26. Attach the door latch and actuator retainer to the regulator panel. Insert the mounting tabs into the holes, then slide the door latch and actuator retainer rearwards.
27. Attach the electrical connector to the actuator.
28. Install the rear door latch mounting screws (3 each) and install the outside handle rod to the outside handle assembly.
29. Install the rear door inside handle cable and safety lock cable to the inside handle assembly.
- Safety lock cable : single wire (black).
- Inside handle cable: multi wires (gray).
NOTE:
Be sure to attach the cable with the inside groove. If the outside groove is used, the door will not open.
30. To prevent rattle noise, cover the inner door panel with the supplied pad. (See parts list)
31. Use the supplied wire tie to secure the cables to the door panel 3/4" (20 mm) hole. Trim the excess length from the wire tie.
32. Check the rear door inside handle cable and safety lock knob for proper operation.
33. Install the rear door division panel bolt and verify the glass run is still fully inserted into it.
34. Install the rear door trim seal. 3M Calk Strips can be used if additional adhesive is needed around the cables.
NOTE:
The door trim seal must provide a complete seal to prevent water leakage into the interior and door trim panel damage. The bottom of the door trim seal must seal just below the drain hole.
35. Install the door trim panel assembly.
