2001 ELANTRA INTERFERENCE NOISE BETWEEN FRONT STRUT INSULATOR BOLTS AND APRON PANEL
DESCRIPTION:
Some 2001 MY Elantras may experience a metallic "grinding" or "groaning" noise from the front suspension when driving over bumpy roads or while turning the vehicle. This noise may originate from interference between burrs around the front strut insulator mounting bolts and the fender apron holes. This bulletin provides a procedure to correct this condition.
VEHICLES AFFECTED:
^ Model: 2001 ELANTRA
^ Affected vehicle production date range: Produced through August 20, 2001
SERVICE PROCEDURE:
1. Verify that the vehicle was manufactured within the affected production date range.
2. Replace front strut insulator mounting nuts (RH and LH) with the modified flange nuts.
TIGHTENING TORQUE:
60Nm (600kg.cm, 43lb.ft)
NOTE:
Flange nut locations.
3. Road test and release vehicle if the noise condition is corrected.
NOTE:
If the noise condition is not corrected, remove the front strut assembly and remove burrs using the following steps.
4. Clean out any burrs around the strut insulator assembly as shown.
5. Remove all burrs on the underside of the apron panel holes using an appropriate burr-cleaning tool.
6. Re-install all components in the reverse order of removal.
NOTES:
^ Align strut insulator bolts in the center of the apron holes before tightening the strut mounting nuts.
^ Do not use any washer between the nut and the apron.
^ Torque all nuts and bolts using the torque specification provided in the Shop Manual.
7. Road test the vehicle to verify the noise condition has been corrected.
