Subject:
2001 ELANTRA AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE FINAL DRIVE GEAR "WHINE" NOISE

DESCRIPTION

Some 2001 Elantra vehicles with automatic transaxles produced prior to January 13, 2001 may exhibit a "whine" noise from the transaxle when driving at a steady speed or decelerating at light throttle between 30-40 mph. The noise is transmitted through the transaxle shift cable.

This bulletin provides a procedure for installation of a mass damper on the automatic transaxle shift cable to minimize noise that may be transmitted through the shift cable.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

1. Remove three screws and one bolt, then remove the heat shield.

2. Loosen the hose clamp on the intake hose.

3. Release the clips, then remove the air cleaner filter and cover.

4. Remove the three bolts, then remove the air cleaner body

5. Attach the mass damper to the shift cable approximately 10 inches from the shift cable bracket. Using a hex wrench, tighten the 4 bolts securely to approximately 12 lb.in.

NOTE:
If the mass damper is installed too tightly the shift lever may not move freely.

6. After installing the mass damper, install a tie-wrap to secure the shift cable to the harness support bracket on the engine block directly above the cable to control movement of the cable.

7. Reinstall the air cleaner body, filter and cover. Tighten the hose clamp.

8. Reinstall the heat shield.

9. Test drive the vehicle and check for a "whine" noise from the transaxle. If the noise level is similar to other 2001 Elantra vehicles produced after 1/13/01, return the vehicle to the customer.
