ELECTROCHROMIC REAR VIEW MIRROR
DESCRIPTION:
This bulletin provides general instructions for diagnosing the optional electrochromic (EC) inside rear view mirror installed on the Santa Fe LX and the XG300L. It also includes the schematic for the Santa Fe, which was omitted from the Electrical Troubleshooting Manual (ETM).
THEORY:
The EC mirror receives power, ground, and a "reverse disable" signal on the three wires that connect to it. It uses two light sensors to sense glare.
^ The forward facing sensor determines if the outside light levels are low enough for the mirror to operate.
^ The rearward facing sensor detects glare from lights behind the mirror. When glare is detected, it sends a signal to the mirror to darken to the required level.
^ The mirror darkens to the level as directed by the rearward facing sensor. When the glare is no longer detected, the mirror returns to normal.
NOTE:
This feature is disabled when the vehicle is placed in reverse.
PROCEDURE
To determine if the EC mirror will dim:
1. Turn the ignition key to the "ON" position.
2. Cover the forward facing sensor.
3. Shine a flashlight into the rearward facing sensor.
4. The mirror should darken as soon as the rearward facing sensor detects the high light level.
NOTE:
If this procedure is performed in a bright area, the mirror may darken as soon as the forward facing sensor is covered.
5. Put the vehicle into reverse, the mirror should not darken.
6. Aim a flashlight at the forward sensor and another flashlight at the rearward sensor. The mirror should not darken.
SCHEMATICS:
The schematic for the XG300L is on page SD130 of the XG300 ETM. The schematic for the Santa Fe is shown.
