2005 ELANTRA, TUCSON, AND TIBURON 2.0L PCM REPROGRAMMING INSTRUCTIONS FOR DTC P0736

DESCRIPTION:

Some 2005 Elantra, Tucson and Tiburon vehicles with 2.0L DOHC engines may have the following symptoms, even though there are no system faults:

1. "Check Engine" light illuminated, and

2. Diagnostic Trouble Code P0736 (Reverse Gear Incorrect Ratio) stored in the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).

NOTE:
There are no vehicle performance issues associated with this condition.

This bulletin provides a procedure to reprogram the PCM using the Hi-Scan Pro.

VEHICLES AFFECTED:

^ Model:

^ 2005 Elantra vehicles with 2.0L engines
^ 2005 Tucson vehicles with 2.0L engines
^ 2005 Tiburon vehicles with 2.0L engines





TCM SPECIFICATIONS:

CAUTIONS BEFORE REPROGRAMMING:

1. Perform reprogramming with the ignition key in the ON position.

2. Be careful not to disconnect any cables connected to the vehicle or Hi-Scan Pro during reprogramming.

3. Do not start the engine during reprogramming.

4. Do not turn the ignition key OFF during reprogramming.

5. When the reprogramming is completely done, wait for about 20 seconds with the ignition key OFF and start the engine for confirming normal operation of the vehicle.

WARNING:
If automatic reprogramming is interrupted, the manual reprogramming procedure must be used.

HI-SCAN PRO INSTALLATION PROCEDURE:

3. Attach the Data Link Connector (DLC) cable to the Hi-Scan Pro and securely tighten the two bolts.

4. Remove the system software card from the Hi-Scan Pro and insert the reprogramming software card with the new PCM program into the Hi-Scan top slot.





5. Plug the DLC cable from the Hi-Scan Pro into the vehicle's connector (16-pin connector) under the instrument panel on the driver's side.

AUTOMATIC REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE:

1. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.

2. Turn the Hi-Scan Pro ON.





3. For ELANTRA TCM reprogramming, select option "63. XD 2.0 PCM REVERSE INCORRECT RATIO" and press ENTER.

NOTE:
Use blue 32MB reprogramming card.





For TIBURON TCM reprogramming, select option "66. GK 2.0 PCM REVERSE INCORRECT RATIO" and press ENTER.

NOTE:
Use black 32MB reprogramming card.





For TUCSON TCM reprogramming, select option "64. JM 2.0 PCM REVERSE INCORRECT RATIO" and press ENTER.

NOTE:
Use blue 32MB reprogramming card.





4. For ELANTRA PCM reprogramming, select option "01. XD 2.0 TCM REVERSE INCORRECT [AUTO]" and press ENTER.





For TIBURON PCM reprogramming, select option "01. GK 2.0 TCM REVERSE INCORRECT [AUTO]" and press ENTER.





For TUCSON PCM reprogramming, select option "01. JM 2.0 TCM REVERSE INCORRECT [AUTO]" and press ENTER.

5. Enter "1229" as the password for automatic reprogramming mode and press ENTER.

6. The Hi-Scan Pro will establish communication, check the TCM ID and reprogram the TCM.

NOTES:

^ The Hi-Scan Pro will display the new TCM ID on the Hi-Scan Pro screen. Verify this TCM ID is correct by referring to the "TCM SPECIFICATIONS" shown.

If the Hi-Scan Pro does not download the program, use the MANUAL REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE following this section.

7. When "REPROGRAMMING COMPLETED" message is displayed, turn the Hi-Scan Pro OFF.

8. Turn the ignition key OFF for about 20 seconds and start the engine for confirming proper operation of the vehicle.

9. Check for diagnostic trouble codes using the Hi-Scan Pro with system software card and erase any trouble codes.

MANUAL REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE:

1. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.

2. Turn the Hi-Scan Pro ON and press ENTER.

3. For ELANTRA TCM reprogramming, select option "63. XD 2.0 TCM REVERSE INCORRECT RATIO" and press ENTER.

For TUCSON TCM reprogramming, select option "64. JM 2.0 TCM REVERSE INCORRECT RATIO" and press ENTER.

For TIBURON TCM reprogramming, select option "66. GK 2.0 TCM REVERSE INCORRECT RATIO" and press ENTER.

4. For ELANTRA TCM reprogramming, select option "02. XD 2.0 TCM REVERSE INCORRECT [ERROR]" and press ENTER.

For TUCSON TCM reprogramming, select option "02. JM 2.0 TCM REVERSE INCORRECT [ERROR]" and press ENTER.

For TIBURON TCM reprogramming, select option "02. GK 2.0 TCM REVERSE INCORRECT [ERROR]" and press ENTER.





5. Choose the vehicle type which is correct for your vehicle by using the "PCM SPECIFICATIONS" table shown and press ENTER.





6. Enter the password which is correct for your vehicle for the manual reprogramming and press ENTER.

7. The Hi-Scan Pro will establish communication, check the 1CM ID and reprogram the 1CM.

^ The Hi-Scan Pro will display the new TCM ID on the Hi-Scan Pro screen. Verify this TCM ID is correct by referring to the "TCM SPECIFICATIONS" shown.

8. When "REPROGRAMMING COMPLETED" message is displayed, turn the Hi-Scan Pro OFF.

9. Turn the ignition key OFF for about 20 seconds and start the engine for confirming proper operation of the vehicle

10. Check for diagnostic trouble codes using the Hi-Scan Pro with system software card programming procedure.
