IMPORTANT:
DEALERS MUST PERFORM THIS CAMPAIGN ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES PRIOR TO CUSTOMER RETAIL DELIVERY AND WHENEVER AN AFFECTED VEHICLE IS IN THE SHOP FOR ANY MAINTENANCE OR REPAIR.

IMPORTANT:
WHEN A VEHICLE ARRIVES AT THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT, ACCESS HYUNDAI MOTOR AMERICA'S "WARRANTY VEHICLE INFORMATION" SCREEN VIA DCS INTERACTIVE OR DCS ON-LINE TO IDENTIFY OPEN CAMPAIGNS.

DESCRIPTION:

This bulletin provides a procedure for using the Hi-Scan Pro to update the parameters stored in the 2004-05 MY Elantra air bag control unit (ACU).

^ Model: 2004-2005 ELANTRA

^ Affected vehicle production date range: Produced through December 21, 2004





ACU REPROGRAMMING SPECIFICATIONS - For Information Purposes Only:

CAUTIONS BEFORE REPROGRAMMING:

1. Conduct reprogramming with the ignition key in the "ON" position.

2. Be careful not to disconnect any cables connected to the vehicle or Hi-Scan Pro during reprogramming.

WARNING:
If reprogramming is interrupted, the manual update procedure must be used.

3. Do not start the engine during reprogramming.

4. Do not turn the ignition key OFF during reprogramming.

5. When the reprogramming is completed, turn the ignition key OFF for 20 seconds before starting the engine.

ACU REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE:

NOTE:
Verify that the vehicle is affected by identifying the vehicle production date via DCS.

AUTOMATIC UPDATE PROCEDURE:

1. Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position and confirm that the air bag warning light in the instrument cluster flashes approximately six times and then turns off.

NOTE:
If the air bag warning light in the cluster remains illuminated after flashing, diagnose and repair the air bag system before starting the reprogramming procedure.





2. Attach the Data Link Connector (DLC) cable to the Hi-Scan Pro main body and securely tighten the two bolts.

3. Remove the system software card from the Hi-Scan Pro and insert the reprogramming software card (containing the new air bag program) into the Hi-Scan Pro top slot.

4. Plug the DLC cable from the Hi-Scan Pro into the 16 pin data link connector located to the left of the steering wheel under the instrument panel.

5. Turn the ignition to the "ON" position.

6. Turn the Hi-Scan pro ON.





7. Select option "56. XD F/L AIR-BAG REPROGRAMMING" and press ENTER.





8. Select option "01. XD F/L AIR-BAG REPROGRAMMING [AUTO]" and press ENTER.





9. Enter "1229" as the password for the automatic update mode and press ENTER.





10. The parameter will be downloaded as shown. The Hi-Scan Pro will reprogram the ACU automatically.

NOTE:
The Hi-Scan Pro detects the CAR MODEL and ACU PART NO. and displays them on the Hi-Scan Pro screen.





WARNING:
If a communication error occurs during reprogramming, use the Manual Update Procedure following this section to reprogram the ACU. If a diagnostic code(s) is detected during reprogramming, repair the air bag system as specified by the code and reprogram again, using the automatic update procedure.

NOTE:
Do not interrupt the reprogramming at any time.





11. When the "REPROGRAMMING COMPLETED" message is displayed, turn the Hi-Scan Pro off and the process is complete.

12. Turn the ignition key to the "OFF" position for 20 seconds and then start the engine to check for proper operation.

13. Check for diagnostic codes using the Hi-Scan Pro with the system software card. Erase any diagnostic codes.

MANUAL UPDATE PROCEDURE:

NOTES:

^ In the event a communication error occurs in menu option "01. XD F/L AIR-BAG REPROGRAMMING [AUTO]" during the data download process, the Manual Update Procedure must be used to reprogram the ACU.

^ If a diagnostic code(s) is detected during reprogramming, repair the air bag system as specified by the code and reprogram again, using the Automatic Update Procedure.

^ Confirm all connections are established as shown in the previous "AUTOMATIC UPDATE PROCEDURE" section before continuing.

1. Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position.

2. Turn the Hi-Scan Pro ON.





3. Select option "56. XD F/L AIR-BAG REPROGRAMMING" and press ENTER.





4. Select option "02. XD F/L AIR-BAG REPROGRAMMING [ERROR]" and press ENTER.





5. Select option "01. XD F/L AIR-BAG ERROR MODE" and enter "2600" as the password for Manual Update Mode and press ENTER.

6. Wait until the reprogramming is completed. The Hi-Scan Pro will reprogram the ACU.





NOTE:
The Hi-Scan Pro detects the CAR MODEL and PART NO. and displays them on the Hi-Scan Pro screen.





WARNING:
If a communication error occurs during reprogramming, use the Manual Update Procedure again to reprogram the ACU. If a diagnostic code(s) is detected during reprogramming, repair the air bag system as specified by the code and reprogram again, using the Automatic Reprogram Procedure.

NOTE:
Do not interrupt the reprogramming at any time.





7. When the "REPROGRAMMING COMPLETED" message is displayed, turn the Hi-Scan Pro off and the process is complete.

8. Turn the ignition key to the "OFF" position for 20 seconds and then start the engine to check for proper operation.

9. Check for diagnostic codes using the Hi-Scan Pro with the system software card. Erase any diagnostic codes.

EXPLANATION OF ERROR MESSAGE:

1. "INVALID PASSWORD": Please enter the correct password again.

2. "REPROGRAMMING ERROR, PLEASE WAIT FOR RETRY": An error occurred during reprogramming, the Hi-Scan Pro will retry the reprogramming automatically.

3. "ALREADY REPROGRAMMED" or "THIS ACU IS DIFFERENT TYPE": The reprogramming already has been performed on this vehicle or the ACU is not the valid type for this program.

4. "COMMUNICATION ERROR PLEASE CHECK THE SYSTEM": In this case, the Manual Update Procedure must be used by selecting menu option "02. XD F/L AIR-BAG REPROGRAMMING [ERROR]".
