Vehicle Speed Sensor: Description and Operation
CIRCUIT DESCRIPTIONThe vehicle speed sensor which is installed on the speedometer driven gear in the transaxle provides a pulse signal to the ECM, and the ECM calculates the vehicle speed. In addition to the vehicle speed sensor, a wheel speed sensor which is installed on the right front wheel provides a direct analog pulse signal to the ECM, and the ECM calculates the vehicle speed (V6 without ABS ONLY).
With the ignition switch in ON or START, battery voltage is supplied from fuse 17 through the PINK (P) wire to the vehicle speed sensor (VSS). The sensor is grounded by the B/O wire to G16 (V6)/G11(DOHC). The speedometer other control modules, and data link connector in the circuit supply about 5 volts to the wire connected to C72(V6)/C12(DOHC) terminal 3. The vehicle speed sensor (VSS) intermittently grounds the circuit, which generates a pulse signal in it. The number of pulses per minute increases/decreases with the speed of the car.
