2005 SONATA 2.4L ECM REPROGRAMMING
FOR WARM AMBIENT (SUMMER) COLD START
DRIVEABILITY
DESCRIPTION:
Some 2005 Sonata 2.4L vehicles may exhibit a brief driveability condition during the initial startup and drive when the engine is cold. This condition only occurs when the temperature and humidity are high and can be identified by the following symptoms:
1. 2005 Model Year Sonata.
2. 2.4L Engine.
3. Vehicle exhibits reduced power and/or hesitates under the following conditions:
^ The ambient air temperature is high (above approximately 80°F).
^ The ambient humidity is high (above approximately 50%).
^ The condition lasts for approximately 30 seconds to one minute after startup.
^ The engine is cold with the coolant temperature close to the ambient air temperature.
4. Vehicle has no other driveability related conditions.
5. Vehicle runs as expected after approximately 30 seconds to one minute.
^ This bulletin describes the procedure for updating the Engine Control Module (ECM) software to correct the above condition by using the Hi-Scan Pro.
VEHICLES AFFECTED:
^ Model: 2005 SONATA 2.4L vehicles
^ Affected vehicle production date range: July 6, 2004 -
ECM SPECIFICATIONS:
CAUTIONS BEFORE REPROGRAMMING:
1. Conduct reprogramming with the ignition key in the "ON" position.
2. Be careful not to disconnect any cables connected to the vehicle or Hi-Scan Pro during reprogramming.
WARNING:
If reprogramming is interrupted, the manual update procedure must be used.
3. Do not start the engine during reprogramming.
4. Do not turn the ignition key OFF during reprogramming.
5. When the reprogramming is completed, turn OFF the ignition key for 20 seconds before starting the engine.
PCM REPROGRAMMING:
NOTE:
Verify that the vehicle is affected by identifying the vehicle production date and VIN.
EXPLANATION OF ERROR MESSAGE:
1. "INVALID PASSWORD": Please enter the correct password again.
2. "REPROGRAMMING ERROR PLEASE WAIT FOR RETRY": An error occurred during reprogramming, the Hi-Scan Pro will retry the reprogramming automatically.
3. "ALREADY REPROGRAMMED" or "INCORRECT TARGET ID": The reprogramming has previously been done on this vehicle or the ECM is not the type subject for this reprogramming procedure.
4. "REPROGRAM ERROR PLEASE CHECK THE SYSTEM": In this case you must reprogram manually after selecting the menu option "02. EF 2.4 05MY COLD START HESITATION [ERROR]".
