Steering Column: Service and Repair

REMOVAL
1. Remove the driver's side air big module (DAB) by using the hexagonal wrench.





2. Disconnect the DAB and horn connector, and remove the steering wheel nut.





3. Remove the steering wheel using the special tool (09561-11001).

CAUTION: Do not hammer on the steering wheel to remove it; doing so may damage the collapsible mechanism.

4. Remove the steering column lower and upper shrouds.
5. Remove the lower crash pad panel.
6. Remove the hood release lever and then disconnect the DLC (Data Link Connector).





7. Remove the lower crash pad frame.





8. Disconnect the connectors and remove the multifunction switch.





9. Remove the bolt securing the coupling and universal joint.
Pull out coupling and universal joint from the gear box.
10. Remove the steering column mounting 4 bolts.





11. Remove the steering column.

DISASSEMBLY





1. Remove the coupling and universal joint from the steering column and shaft assembly.





2. If it is necessary to remove the steering and ignition lock assembly, use a hack saw to cut the torsion bolt at the key holder assembly side.

INSPECTION
1. Check the steering shaft for damage or distortion.
2. Check the joints for excessive play, damage or rough movement.
3. Check the tilt bracket for cracks or damage.
4. Check that the steering lock mechanism operates properly. If necessary, replace.

REASSEMBLY
1. When installing the steering and ignition lock assembly to the column tube, temporarily install the steering and ignition lock assembly in alignment with the column boss.





2. After checking that the lock works properly, tighten the torsion bolts until the head twists off.

CAUTION: The torsion bolt must be replaced with now ones when the steering and ignition lock assembly is installed.





3. Install the coupling and universal joint to the steering column and shaft assembly.

INSTALLATION
1. Install the universal joint to the gear box pinion.
2. Install the steering column assembly to the column member assembly (4 bolts).
3. Install the multifunction switch and connect the connectors.
4. Install the lower cover and upper and lower shroud.





5. Install the steering wheel.

NOTE: When installing, do not use a hammer as the collapsible column shaft could be damaged.
