Subject
2005MY ECM AND PCM VIN WRITING DURING
CONTROL MODULE REPLACEMENT
DESCRIPTION:
This bulletin provides the procedure to write a VIN to an ECM or PCM during control module replacement. All 2005 and later model vehicles must have the VIN recorded in a permanent PROM in the Engine or Powertrain Control Module. Once the VIN is recorded, it cannot be removed or written over.
^ All vehicles are shipped with the VIN recorded into the ECM / PCM permanent memory. If a module needs replacing, the VIN must be recorded into the new module.
^ New service replacement modules have a "Virgin" status displayed on the Hi-Scan until the VIN is recorded.
^ The MIL will be illuminated and code P0630 will be displayed if the VIN is not recorded into a "Virgin" control module.
CAUTION:
^ Do not exchange an ECM / PCM from another vehicle as a permanent repair. If the module has to be replaced, a new service replacement control module should be used, and the VIN must be programmed into the new control module.
^ For diagnostic purposes, an ECM/PCM from another vehicle may be temporarily installed in the vehicle being serviced; however, the ECM/PCM must be returned to the vehicle it was removed from after diagnosis is complete.
PROCEDURE:
1. Connect the Hi-Scan Pro to the vehicle's Data Link Connector (DLC).
2. Turn the ignition to the ON position.
3. Turn the Hi-Scan Pro ON.
