ELECTRONIC THROTTLE CONTROL SYSTEM
(ETS) INITIALIZATION
This TSB supersedes TSB # 02-36-005. This TSB information applies to the XG350, as well as the XG3OO and Santa Fe 3.5L.
DESCRIPTION:
The XG300, XG350, and Santa FE 3.5L incorporate an Electronic Throttle control System (ETS).
The main advantages of the ETS:
^ Precise control of the throttle plate in response to the driver's input.
^ System integration with idle speed control, cruise control and traction control.
The main components of the ETS and their functions are:
1. Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor (APS): This sensor detects the driver's throttle input. This is a redundant sensor: two sensors in one housing.
2. ETS Control Module: This module controls the electric motor which controls the throttle valve. (2001-2004 XG300/350 only)
3. Throttle body with:
A. Redundant TPS (two sensors in one housing): This sensor detects the position of the throttle valve.
B. Electric Motor for controlling the throttle valve (3-phase, brush less, DC motor):
This motor directly controls the throttle valve opening angle.
C. Limp Home Valve: This valve allows the engine to continue running in case of certain ETS malfunctions.
The photographs illustrate the components mentioned above.
IMPORTANT:
Whenever the ETS Control Module, PCM or Throttle Position Sensor is replaced or disconnected, the INITIALIZATION process must be carried out. If not, the ENGINE WILL NOT START!
A description of the initialization process is in this TSB.
When repair work is performed on the ETS, "INITIALIZATION" of the system is sometimes required.
INITIALIZATION:
INITIALIZATION is the process by which the ETS Control Module "learns" and memorizes the DC Motor's Rotor position relative to the throttle plate position. It involves taking hundreds of data points of the electric motor's rotor position relative to the throttle plate position from fully closed to fully open and back to fully closed. This learning is critical for the electric motor's quick and precise control of the throttle valve.
PERFORMING THE INITIALIZATION:
1. Turn the ignition key to the ON position (for less than one second) and quickly turn the ignition key back to the OFF position.
2. For the next 20 seconds, the ETS Control Module/PCM performs the INITIALIZATION process.
DO NOT turn the key back on until the INITIALIZATION is complete (20 seconds).
THE TABLE SHOWS WHEN INITIALIZATION IS REQUIRED:
