ATA SOLENOID DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES P0741, P0742, P0743, P0748, P0750, P0755, P0760, P0765

This TSB supersedes TSB 09-AT-011-1 to change the repair procedure (Step 22).

NOTE:
This TSB requires Kent-Moore J-36850-A Transmission Assembly Lube (Available at 800-345-2233).

DESCRIPTION:

Incorrect operation of the transaxle solenoids may result in the following symptoms:

^ "Check Engine" Light illuminated

^ Transaxle in 3rd gear Fail-Safe

^ Diagnostic Trouble Codes:

PARTS INFORMATION:

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

1. Using a GDS, check for DTC in both the "Engine" and "Automatic Transaxle" menus. Record the DTC and description.

2. Using a GDS, check the continuity of the harness by a solenoid Actuation lest. Select: VIN and "A/T" menu, System Option and "Actuation Test"

3. Turn the engine off, ignition switch to the "ON" position and move the shift lever to "P". Select each solenoid, then press "Start". Look for a "Normal signal output from TCU" indication.

NOTE:
This test confirms the wiring harness does not have an open or short circuit. It does not confirm the proper functioning of the solenoids under all conditions of heat and vibration or intermittent open/short condition.

If the test result in Step 3 shows:

^ "Fail": go to Step 4.

^ "Normal signal output from the TCU": The wiring between the PCM and transaxle currently has no open or short circuits. Go to Step 5.

4. If Step 3 shows "Fail the harness may have an open or short to ground. Perform the following:

^ Visually check the wiring harness between the PCM and transaxle for a damaged wire or a short circuit to ground.

^ Disconnect the connectors at the transaxle and the PCM and check for a bent pin or a pin not fully inserted into the connector.

^ If a harness open/short is found: Repair or replace the ECM control harness between the PCM and transaxle, P/N 91410-2H*** (refer to parts catalog).

^ Repeat Step 3.

5. Refer to the DTC recorded in Step 1 and follow the repair procedure shown.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

6. Remove the air cleaner intake duct. Press downward on the tab until a click is heard and remove the connector.

7. Remove the C-clip and push the connector inside the transaxle.

8. Drain the ATF.

9. Remove all except 2 bolts to the oil pan. Loosen the remaining 2 bolts 1/8~1/4 inch.

10. Use a rubber hammer to hit the oil pan at the corner until the pan breaks free from the case.

11. Remove the 3 bolts and remove the oil filter.

12. Remove the 14 mm nut and remove the manual valve lever.

13. Press the tab to disconnect the solenoid harness connector.

14. Remove the bolts to the valve body and carefully lower the valve body.

CAUTION:
The accumulators and springs may fall out of the transaxle case.

15. Carefully lay the valve body on a clean paper towel.

CAUTION:
Do not use a shop rag. Cloth rags contain lint that may cause a valve to stick in the valve body.

SOLENOID REPLACEMENT:

^ FOR DTC P0741, P0742, P0743, P0750, P0755, P0760 OR P0765:

16. Insert a screwdriver and twist lightly to release the tab, then disconnect the solenoid harness connectors.

17. Insert a screwdriver and twist lightly to release the tab, then disconnect the VFS solenoid connector.

NOTE:
Replace the VFS solenoid only if P0748 was set.

18. Slide the connector off the valve body.

19. Remove 7 bolts and remove the solenoids and spacer plate from the valve body.

20. Install the spacer plate and new solenoids and tighten the bolts to specification.

Torque: 7~8 lb-ft (100~120 kgf.cm)

21. Replace both harnesses:

^ 46308-23000 - Solenoid harness

^ 46307-23010 Temperature sensor harness

NOTE:
These harnesses supply power to the solenoids and may cause the DTC.

22. Connect the harness to the solenoid assembly and VFS.

^ FOR DTC P0748, VFS SOLENOID VALVE CIRCUIT - OPEN/SHORT:

23. Insert a screwdriver and twist lightly to release the tab, then disconnect the VFS solenoid connector.

24. Remove the bolt for the solenoid retainer and remove the VFS solenoid. Install a new VFS solenoid and torque to specification.

Torque: 7~8 ft-lb (100~120 kgf.cm)

25. Reconnect the solenoid connector.

REASSEMBLY:

26. Apply assembly lube and install two 0-rings in the locations shown.

27. Apply Kent-Moore Assembly Lube, P/N J-36850-A (available at 800-345-2233) to the accumulator and bore in the case.

CAUTION:
Other assembly lube products may not hold the accumulators in place during assembly.

NOTE:
An assistant my be required to hold the accumulators in place until the valve body is installed in the case.

28. Install the yellow springs in the location shown.

29. Install the 2 white springs in the location shown:

30. Install the valve body and torque the bolts to specification. Torque: 7~8 lb-ft (100~120 kgf.cm)

31. Confirm the manual valve is inserted into the slot.

32. Install the manual valve lever to the manual valve and torque the nut to specification.

Torque: 7~8 lb-ft (100~120 kgf.cm)

33. Reconnect the connector to the valve body.

34. Install the o-ring on the oil filter.

35. Install three magnets on the oil filter.

36. Install the oil filter with 3 bolts and torque to specification.

Torque: 7~8 lb-ft (100~120 kgf.cm)

37. Apply Permatex Ultra Gray Sealer or Hyundai Ultra Gray Gasket Sealer, P/N 00231-13800 to the oil pan and reinstall the cover. Tighten the bolts to specification.

Torque: 6-7 lb.ft (80-100 kgf.cm).

38. Add approximately 4.5 quarts of Hyundai SPIII ATF and check the level with the engine idling in Neutral or Park. Recheck the ATF level when the ATF is at normal operating temperature (70-80°C, 158-176° F).

39. Clear the codes and test drive the vehicle for two driving cycles (two key-on to key-off driving cycles, including 1-2-3-4 upshifts and 4-3-2-1 downshifts). If the DTC returns, perform the following repairs:
