Campaign 100

CAMPAIGN 100: AIRBAG CONTROL UNIT (ACU) REPROGRAMMING

VEHICLES AFFECTED:

2007-2008 Elantra Vehicles produced from July 14, 2006 through August 29, 2007.

GDS ACU SOFTWARE REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE:

Important Cautions for Reprogramming:

^ Reprogramming by GDS can only be performed by using the USB cable between a laptop and the VCI; wireless cannot be used for reprogramming.

^ Make sure the GDS laptop battery indicator at the bottom right of the screen indicates at least 25% battery charge remaining to be able to complete reprogramming; if not, charge the laptop or keep the AC adaptor connected while reprogramming.

^ Perform reprogramming with the ignition key in the ON position.

^ Turn off all lights (do not leave headlight switch in auto mode) and all accessories (including heater/air conditioner/blower, radio, heated seat, rear defroster, etc.) to make certain the battery will not be discharged during reprogramming.

^ Be careful not to disconnect any cables connected to the vehicle during reprogramming.

^ Do not start the engine during reprogramming.

^ Do not turn the ignition switch OFF during reprogramming.

IMPORTANT:
Before conducting the update to the vehicle's ACU software, verify the vehicle falls within the production date range as noted on page 7 of this bulletin and has an open recall 100.

1. Connect the GDS VCI module to the vehicle's DLC connector and the USB cable between the VCI and GDS laptop's USB port.

2. Turn on the vehicle ignition. Make sure the green power LED is lit on the VCI if it is not lit press on the power button of the VCI. Within a few seconds, the top of the GDS screen should indicate VCI: USB On in bright green.

3. Make sure the GDS has the latest data by pressing the bottom right Internet Update button on the GDS screen. You will get a confirmation on the GDS screen if it is already updated; otherwise the Download Start button will be viewable and should be pressed to update the GDS.

NOTE:
You must have an internet connection to GDS to be able to receive any updated data; the bright green "Internet On" should illuminate on top of the screen.

NOTE:
If a GDS internet update is available, it could take up to several minutes to download and complete the update.

4. Press the VIN button at the top of the screen to launch the GDS VIN search screen.

5. Press the Auto VIN button to automatically read the vehicle's VIN (or you will need to manually enter vehicle, year, and engine if it does not automatically read this information) then press Airbag for system.

6. Select All Systems from the below screen.

7. Select the OK button at the bottom of the screen.

8. Press the ECU Upgrade button on the following screen:

9. In the ECU Upgrade screen select AUTO MODE then the NEXT button

10. In the screen below select AIRBAG then the OK button.

The following screen appears as GDS is reading the CURRENT ROM ID.

11. After the ROM ID is displayed, click the Upgrade button.

12. At the screen below, enter "5609" as the password for the ACU upgrade and then click OK.

13. The battery voltage is verified to make sure it is at least 12 volts to ensure reliable update results. Click OK if the results indicate the voltage is OK.

NOTE:
If voltage is below 12 volts, click Cancel and then run the engine for several minutes to ensure an adequate battery charge state for reliable update results.

14. Reprogramming of the ACU will begin starting with the screen below and gradually showing the progress on the bar.

15. Update will occur until 100% is reached on the bar graph. After the ACU REPROGRAMMING COMPLETED screen appears, click the OK button.

16. Check that no incidental Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) have been created by the reprogramming and, if there are, that they don't return after being cleared. If they returned after being cleared, follow the diagnostic directions for that DTC.

17. Log GDS off and remove all GDS cables from the vehicle. Turn off the ignition for at least 10 seconds.

18. Start the engine and confirm correct operation of the SRS system.
