Subject:
MOTOR DRIVEN POWER STEERING (MDPS) SYSTEM WORM SHAFT FLEXIBLE COUPLING REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE
DESCRIPTION:
This bulletin provides the procedure to replace the steering column shaft assembly's worm shaft flexible coupling (P/N 56315-2H000-FFF).
If a vehicle exhibits a rattle noise in the steering column while driving at low speed (under 40 mph) over rough roads, replacing the flexible coupling should correct this condition.
AFFECTED VEHICLES:
^ Model: 2007 and 2008 ELANTRA
SERVICE PROCEDURE:
NOTE:
During this procedure, do not disassemble any part or component except the worm shaft flexible coupling from the steering column shaft assembly.
1. Disconnect the battery negative terminal and remove the steering column shaft assembly from the vehicle using the applicable shop manual procedure.
2. In case of a vehicle produced before January 14, 2008, remove the steering column bracket "S" by unfastening the 4 mounting bolts with a hexagonal wrench.
Tightening torque:
6.5~9.4 lb-ft (8.8~12.7 Nm).
3. In case of a vehicle produced after January 14, 2008, remove the steering column lower bracket "T2" by unfastening the mounting bolts "T" and "T1".
Tightening torque:
Bolts "T": 5.1 lb-ft (6.9 Nm)
Bolts "T1": 9.4~13 lb-ft (12.7~17.7 Nm)
4. Remove the power head "U" by unfastening the 4 mounting bolts.
Tightening torque:
6.5 ~ 9.4 lb-ft (8.8 ~ 12.7 Nm)
5. Remove the wave washer "U1".
6. Disconnect the sensor wiring connector.
CAUTION:
Unlock the connector by pushing the lock button "U3" and pull the connector housing without pulling on the sensor wiring "U2".
7. Remove the MDPS ECU "U4" by unfastening the 3 mounting bolts.
Tightening torque:
4.3 lb-ft (5.9 Nm)
CAUTION:
Be careful not to damage the wiring connector pins of MDPS ECU.
8. Remove the MDPS motor assembly "U5" by unfastening the 4 mounting bolts.
Tightening torque:
4.3 lb-ft (5.9 Nm)
9. Carefully remove the flexible coupling "V" from the MDPS motor assembly.
CAUTION:
While removing the flexible coupling, be careful not to turn the motor pin "V1" and the worm shaft "V2".
10. Assemble the replacement flexible coupling "V3" (P/N: 56315-2H000-FFF) with the MDPS motor assembly.
11. Assemble the motor assembly and the worm shaft.
CAUTION:
(1) Make sure that the flexible coupling teeth "V4" engages with the worm shaft teeth "V5" exactly.
(2) Make sure that the motor assembly fixing pins "V6" fits with the motor housing fixing holes "V7".
12. Assemble the MDPS ECU with the motor assembly.
CAUTION:
The wiring connector of the motor assembly and MDPS ECU may be stiff. Be careful not to damage the connector pins.
13. Connect the sensor wiring connector "W " and assemble the wave washer "W1".
14. Assemble the power head "X ".
15. Assemble the steering column assembly mounting bracket.
NOTE:
The photo shows the steering column assembly from a vehicle produced before January 14, 2008
16. Install the steering column shaft assembly in the vehicle in the reverse order of removal.
17. Connect the battery negative terminal.
18. Conduct ASP (Absolute Steering Position) calibration procedure according to the applicable shop manual and check DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) with the Scan tool.
