Group FUEL SYSTEMNumber 11-FL-002-1
Date MARCH, 2011
Model 2007-2010 ELANTRA (HD)
SUBJECT:
MIL WITH P0300-P0304 (AFTER LONG-TERM STORAGE)
THIS BULLETIN SUPERSEDES TSB 11-FL-002 TO CORRECT CAUSE CODE FROM C36 TO C32.
DESCRIPTION:
When starting the engines of some ELANTRA (HD) 2.0L vehicles after long-Term storage, the check engine light may illuminate with misfire related trouble codes P0300 through P0304:
^ P0300: Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
^ P0301: Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected
^ P0302: Cylinder 2 Misfire Detected
^ P0303: Cylinder 3 Misfire Detected
^ P0304: Cylinder 4 Misfire Detected
These DTCs may result from temporary unstable combustion due to aged fuel and carbon deposits accumulated on the spark plug(s) during long-Term storage. This bulletin provides a procedure to address the condition.
APPLICABLE VEHICLES:
^ 2007-2010 ELANTRA (HD)
SERVICE PROCEDURE:
Conduct either the Method #1 or Method #2 procedure based on whichever is most convenient or practical for the vehicle and dealer storage situation:
^ Method #1: Keep the engine running at 2500-3000 rpm in the "N" position for 15 minutes after warming up the engine according to the procedure outlined in this bulletin.
^ Method #2: Drive the vehicle for over 20 minutes, keeping the engine speed above 3500 rpm as much as possible, while obeying local traffic laws.
Method # 1
1. Engage the parking brake, then start the engine and run at idle for 2 minutes.
2. Place shift lever into the "N" position and step on the accelerator pedal to hold steady at 4500 rpm to warm up the engine until the engine coolant temperature reaches 80 deg C.
3. Keep the engine running at 2500-3000 rpm in the "N" position for 15 minutes.
Method # 2
1. Start the engine and keep the engine running at idle for 2 minutes.
2. Drive the vehicle for over 20 minutes, keeping the engine speed above 3500 rpm as much as possible while obeying local traffic laws.
NOTE:
If equipped with a manual transaxle, shift the gears properly to keep the engine speed above 3500 rpm. If an automatic transaxle you may need to shift down to "3" or "2" gear as appropriate to sustain over 3500 rpm.
Conclusion of Repair:
1. Erase DTC in the Engine Control Module.
2. Start the engine and confirm that the engine runs normal without misfire.
3. If misfire continues check the fuel quality (refer to TSB 10-FL-13). If fuel is found to be of poor quality, add at least 2 gallons of fresh fuel.
4. If misfire still continues, refer to the service manual diagnostic procedures for P0300-P0304.
