Steering - Steering Column Rattle Noise On Rough Roads

MDPS WORM SHAFT FLEXIBLE COUPLING REPLACEMENT SERVICE PROCEDURE





Description:
Some vehicles may exhibit a slight rattle noise from the steering column at low speeds while driving over rough roads or turning the steering wheel right and left. This bulletin describes the procedure to replace the worm shaft flexible coupling in the motor driven power steering (MDPS) steering column to address this condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE:





1. Remove the steering column shaft & MDPS (EPS) unit assembly from the vehicle using the applicable shop manual procedure.





2. Remove the 4 steering column mounting bracket upper bolts (a, b) using a hexagonal wrench.





3. Remove the collapsible guide (A).





4. Raise the steering column mounting bracket and remove the spacer (B).





5. Remove the stopper bracket (C) by unfastening the bolt (D).





6. Remove the hinge bolt (E).





7. Remove the steering column mounting bracket (F).





8. Remove the power head (G) by unfastening the 4 mounting bolts and set it aside.





9. Remove the wave washer (H) and disconnect the sensor wiring connector (I).





10. Remove the MDPS ECU mounting bolts (J).





11. Remove the MDPS motor mounting bolts (K).





12. Remove the MDPS motor and ECU by carefully lifting it up.





13. Carefully remove the flexible coupling (L) from the MDPS motor assembly.





14. Remove the MDPS motor worm shaft bush (M).





15. Remove the worm shaft bush spring (N).





16. Cut the corner of the grease plastic bag.





17. Evenly apply grease on the removed worm shaft bush spring.





18. Apply the remaining grease into the worm shaft bush spring hole.





19. Insert the worm shaft bush spring (0) into the hole.





20. Reinstall the MDPS motor worm shaft bush (P).





21. Assemble the replacement flexible coupling "Q" with the MDPS motor assembly. Seat the flexible coupling in place by turning it.





22. Assemble the MDPS motor and ECU with the steering column shaft assembly by carefully pressing it down.





23. For the Elantra Touring (FD), squeeze the new conductor spring (R) into the space between hinges prior to installing the new steering column lower mounting bracket.





24. Assemble the new steering column lower mounting bracket (S) with the steering column shaft assembly by fastening the new hinge bolt (I).





25. Reinstall the stopper bracket (U) by fastening the mounting bolt (V).

26. Reinstall the steering column shaft & MDPS (EPS) unit assembly to the vehicle in reverse order of removal.

27. Connect the battery negative terminal.

28. Conduct the ASP (Absolute Steering Position) calibration procedure according to the applicable shop manual.

29. Check and clear any DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) with the GDS.
