MANUAL DRIVER'S SEAT HEIGHT ADJUSTER PIVOT LUBRICATION PROCEDURE
DESCRIPTION:
Some 2006-2009 Sonata vehicles equipped with a manual driver's seat may exhibit an intermittent squeak/creak sound from the seat cushion area while driving over bumps.
This bulletin provides a service procedure to lubricate the manual driver's seat height adjuster linkage to correct the condition.
VEHICLES AFFECTED:
^ Model: 2006-2009 SONATA
TOOLS & MATERIALS REQUIRED:
^ # 2 Phillips screwdriver, 14mm socket, medium-length socket extension, and suitable racheting socket wrench.
^ Several clean shop rags and absorbent mat.
^ Aerosol-type lubricant fortified with Teflon(R) / PTFE.
NOTE:
Be sure to use the proper type of lubricant that is designed for continued lubricating action of metal hinge-type parts. Once applied, the lubricant should not drip away or completely dry out. Due to these requirements, thin high-solvent type products are not recommended. In addition, the product should not have an unpleasant odor and shall not easily stain the vehicle interior. Test any products away from the vehicle prior to use and follow the usage directions provided by the lubricant manufacturer. (Refer to the recommended lubricant products.)
RECOMMENDED LUBRICANT PRODUCTS FOR THIS REPAIR:
^ The two products shown are available locally at most home improvement stores.
^ The Super Lube(R) Multi-Purpose Aerosol shown can be ordered online through www.super-lube.com or at select specialty stores.
SERVICE PROCEDURE:
NOTE:
Prior to performing the following procedure, prevent unnecessary soiling of the vehicle interior by ensuring that the tools, materials, and your hands are clean of any dirt or oil.
1. Turn ignition key to the OFF position and remove key from cylinder.
2. Slide the driver's seat forward and tilt the seat back slightly forward.
3. Carefully remove the seat track rear fastener covers and fully loosen the two rear mounting bolts.
4. Slide the driver's seat fully rearward and remove the seat track front fastener covers.
5. Loosen and remove the two front mounting nuts and carefully pivot the entire seat assembly rearward.
NOTE:
Check for slack at the floor harness that is routed to the seat while it is pivoted rearward. If there is no slack, adjust the seat back angle so that the harness is not being strained during the work process.
6. Prepare the work area by covering the carpeted surfaces under the seat with absorbent mats and have some clean shop rags within reach to wipe away any excess lubricant.
7. Vigorously shake the canister of the lubricant (according to product instructions) to fully mix the contents and then insert the straw applicator to the nozzle.
8. Remove the Phillips head screw at the front of the left-hand base cover and pry the cover by hand outward slightly to access the left-hand clip of the seat cover.
9. After disengaging the left-hand seat cover clip to gain access, lubricate the outside swaged pivot and overlap points above the outer seat rail.
10. Reinstall the left-hand seat cover clip (from Step 9) by positioning it back over the mounting edge at the bottom of the seat cushion frame.
11. Locate and lubricate the inside pivot points above the outer seat rail.
12. After disengaging the right-hand seat cover clip to gain access, lubricate the outside swaged pivot and overlap points above the inner seat rail.
13. Locate and lubricate the inside pivot points above the inner seat rail.
14. Reinstall the seat cover clip by positioning it back over the mounting edge at the bottom of the seat cushion frame.
15. Reinstall the Phillips head screw at the front of the left-hand base cover after positioning it back to proper location.
16. Remove protective coverings from the work area and inspect that the harness connections under the seat are still intact.
17. Position the front portions of the seat track over the front mounting studs and HAND-TIGHTEN the two front mounting nuts (to be wrench-tightened during later step).
18. Slide seat forward, reinstall the two rear mounting bolts - final torque to 33 lb.ft., and reinstall rear fastener covers.
19. Slide seat rearward and final torque the two front mounting nuts to 22 lb.ft.
NOTE:
Be sure to fully lock the left and right seat tracks to rails prior to final tightening of the fasteners. If higher than normal amount of effort is required to fully lock both sides of the seat tracks to the seat rails, then loosen all (front and rear) seat track to floor fasteners and repeat the process from Step 18.
20. Reinstall the front fastener covers.
21. Verify repair by raising and lowering the drivers seat cushion height several times while sitting on it.
