SERVICE INFORMATION
If a remote switch assembly (remote controller) for a 1998-1999 Infiniti vehicle does not operate or operates intermittently, the remote controller may need to be re-programmed.
Two procedures for programming the remote controllers are provided in this bulletin, one without using CONSULT and one using CONSULT (for 1998-99 Q45 and 1999 QX4 vehicles only).
Confirm that the remote controller(s) being programmed is the correct remote controller for the vehicle.
If the vehicle has more than one remote controller, the remote controllers must all be programmed at the same time.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Programming Without The Use Of CONSULT:
A. Programming one remote controller:
1) Get in the vehicle. Close and lock all doors using the driver's power door lock-unlock switch.
2) Insert and remove the ignition key more than 6 times within a 10 second period (at a rate of one insertion/removal cycle per second). The key should be withdrawn from the ignition key cylinder completely each time it is removed. (See Note 1 below)
3) Turn the ignition key to the "ACC" position. The ignition key should remain in the "ACC" position throughout the remainder of the programming, including programming of additional remote controllers.
4) Press any button on the remote controller one time. (See Note 2 below)
5) If you are programming only one remote1 proceed to step C1 below. If programming additional remotes, continue with step B1.
B. Programming Additional Remote Controllers (Maximum of 4 Remotes):
1) Remain inside the vehicle after programming the first remote.
2) Use the driver's power door lock-unlock switch to unlock and then lock the doors.
3) Press any button on one of the additional remote controllers one time. (See Note 2 below) If there is more than one additional remote to be programmed, repeat steps B1 through B3 above for each additional remote.
C. End Programming:
1) Remove the key from the ignition.
2) Use the door lock-unlock switch on the driver's door to unlock the doors. Open the driver's door to complete the programming. The hazard warning lights will flash twice when programming is successful.
3) Check the operation of each of the remote controllers by locking/unlocking the doors with each remote controller you have programmed.
NOTE1: Do not rush the insertion/removal key cycling process. The hazard warning lights will flash twice when this step is accurately completed.
NOTE 2: Do not press the button more than one time in the above step. If the button is pressed more than one time, the programming procedure will not be successful. The hazard warning lights will flash twice when this step is accurately completed and programming is successful.
2. Programming Using CONSULT (for 1998-99 Q45 and 1999 QX4 vehicles only):
To program the remote controller(s) using CONSULT, refer to the procedure listed in the EL section under MULTI-REMOTE CONTROL SYSTEM - IVMS/ID Code Entry Procedure 2 (With CONSULT) on pages EL-289 and EL-290 of the 1998 Q45 Service Manual, pages EL-347 and EL-348 of the 1999 Q45 Service Manual (Volume 2), and pages EL-222 and EL-223 of the 1999 QX4 Service Manual (Volume 2).
