INFINITI REVISED TPS ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE

This amended version of ITB99-039 updates to include additional TPS information. Please discard all paper copies of ITB99-039.

APPLIED VEHICLE(S)
1996-1998 130 (CA32)
1997-1998 QX4 (JR5O)
1997-1998 Q45 (FY33)
1994-1996 G20 (P10) with Automatic Transmission (A/T)

SERVICE INFORMATION

Vehicles with OBD II self monitoring require the use of the closed throttle position switch (CTPS) in the throttle position sensor (TPS) when adjusting the TPS. The adjustment procedure for the TPS has been revised and standardized for all the applied models, regardless of transmission.

This procedure uses feeler gauges and an ohmmeter to set the CTPS. This is necessary because CONSULT cannot display the CTPS in all of the applied models.

This adjustment procedure must be made with the TPS installed on the engine of the vehicle. Incorrect adjustment of this sensor may cause one or more of the following DTC's to be displayed: P1447, P0120, P0510, P0731, P0732, P0733, P0734, P1705.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Check fast idle cam (FIC) function, if equipped (refer to appropriate Service Manual). When done, make sure the engine is at normal operating temperature and the fast idle cam (if equipped) has released. Then turn the engine off.

For models equipped with throttle opener (see Figure 1):

a. Remove vacuum hose connected to throttle opener.

b. Connect suitable vacuum hose to a hand operated vacuum pump and the opener.

c. Apply vacuum of more than -11.81 inHg (-300 mm Hg) until the throttle drum becomes free from the rod of the throttle opener.

2. Disconnect the harness connector (see Figure 2a) from the closed throttle position switch portion of the throttle position sensor (TPS).

3. Connect an ohm meter across the terminals for the closed throttle position switch (see Figure 2b for CA32 and JR50 models, Figure 2c for FY33 models and Figure 2d for P10 models with A/T). There should be continuity across the terminals with the throttle closed.

NOTE:
P10 models with manual transmissions do not have closed throttle position switches. This bulletin does not apply to them.

NOTE:
Do not touch the throttle drum when checking the closed throttle position switch signal or continuity. Doing so may cause an incorrect adjustment.

4. Refer to the chart shown and select the correct thickness feeler gauges for your vehicle.

5. Insert the thinner feeler gauge "A" between the throttle adjustment screw and the throttle drum stop (see Figure 3). Closed throttle position switch should have continuity.

CAUTION:
Never adjust the throttle adjust screw (TAS). It is adjusted and pre-set at the factory.

6. Insert the thicker feeler gauge "B" between the throttle adjustment screw and the throttle drum stop (see Figure 3). Closed throttle position switch should NOT have continuity.

7. If the results of steps 5 and/or 6 are N/G, loosen the TPS retaining bolts and adjust the switch to achieve the correct results.

8. Tighten the TPS retaining bolts, then repeat steps 5 and 6 two or three times to check the new adjustment.

9. Reconnect the harness connector to the closed throttle position switch portion of the throttle position sensor (TPS).

For models equipped with throttle opener:

a. Release vacuum and disconnect vacuum hose from the vacuum pump to the opener.

b. Reinstall the original vacuum hose securely to the throttle opener. Reset throttle position sensor idle position memory.

NOTE:
Failure to reset the TPS idle position memory may result in the idle speed staying higher than specification.

10. Start engine and warm it to operating temperature.

NOTE:
Always warm up engine to normal operation temperature, If the engine is cool, the throttle position memory will not be reset correctly.

11. Using CONSULT select ENGINE, DATA MONITOR (Manual trigger), Selections From Menu, CLSD THL/P SW, and Enter.

12. Stop engine (turn ignition switch "OFF").

13. Turn ignition switch "ON" and wait at least five seconds.

14. Turn ignition switch "OFF" and wait at least ten seconds.

15. Repeat steps 13 and 14 for 1 to 16 times until CLSD THL/P SW in CONSULT changes to "ON".
