Service Procedure

Install the Steering Column Tilt Bracket Kit as follows:

CAUTION:
Use suitable covers to protect upholstery, carpet, trim, etc. when performing this procedure.

1. Set the Steering Wheel to the straight-ahead direction.

2. Write down all radio station presets.

3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

4. Remove the Steering Wheel:

^ First remove the Driver Air Bag Module from the Steering Wheel. Refer to SRS-37 "Driver Air Bag Module" in the applicable Electronic Service Manual (ESM).

^ Then disconnect the Steering Switch Connector remove the Steering Wheel Lock Nut place a mark to index the Steering Wheel center splines to Steering Column Shaft.

^ Finally remove the Steering Wheel. Refer to SRS-39 "Spiral Cable" in the ESM.

5. Remove the Steering Column Cover. Refer to IP-10 "Instrument Panel Assembly" in the ESM.

6. Remove the Combination Switch & Spiral Cable from the Steering Column Assembly. Refer to SRS-39 "Spiral Cable" in the ESM.

7. Remove the Instrument Lower Panel (driver side). Refer to IP-10 "Instrument Panel Assembly" in the ESM.

8. Remove the Combination Meter. Refer to IP-10 "Instrument Panel Assembly" in the ESM.

9. Remove the bolts that secure the Knee Protector then remove the Knee Protector.

10. Re-connect the negative battery cable. You'll need to do this to perform the next step.

NOTE:
Do NOT turn the Ignition Switch ON to perform the next step.

11. Re-connect the Tilt Steering Switch Connector. Then tilt the Steering Column to the maximum upper position and disconnect the switch. This step will make it easier to remove the Tilt Bracket (covered later in this procedure).

12. Again disconnect the negative battery cable.








13. Remove one lock nut and one bolt then separate the Lower Shaft from the Upper Steering Column Assembly joint (see Figure 1).

14. Remove securing bolts and nuts from the Steering Member then remove the Steering Column Assembly from the Steering Member (see Figure 1).

15. Remove the Hole Cover Seal and Clamp (see Figure 1).

16. Remove the mounting nuts, then remove the Hole Cover from the Panel (see Figure 1).

17. Raise the vehicle, then remove the Lower Joint Mounting Bolts (see Figure 1).

18. Remove the Lower Joint and the Lower Shaft from the vehicle (see Figure 1).

19. Remove the Lower Steering Column Assembly from the vehicle (see Figure 1).





20. Remove the Cross Bracket from the Steering Column Assembly (pry off the bracket with a flat blade screwdriver). See Figure 2.





21. Remove two Screws and remove the Sensor Bracket (see Figure 3).





22. Remove one Screw and remove the Harness Bracket (see Figure 4).





23. Remove 2 Bolts from the Steering Tilt Link (see Figure 5).

CAUTION:
Do NOT damage the white plastic sensor guide.





24. Remove the Tilt Spring (see Figure 6).

^ Pull the spring up and off using a flat blade screwdriver.





25. Remove the 2 Tilt Bolts (see Figure 7).





26. Remove the Tilt Bracket from the Steering Shaft Assembly (see Figure 8).

CAUTION:
Do Not turn the white box or Tilt Motor Shaft. If it's turned, the tilt position will change.





27. Write the column assembly "lot number" onto the same position of the new Tilt Bracket with a permanent marker (oil based pen etc.). See Figure 9.

^ Do not peel off sticker & re-use onto the new Tilt Bracket.

The lot number printed on the old Tilt Bracket must be written on the same position of the new Tilt Bracket to maintain traceability.





28. Install the new Tilt Bracket onto the Column Shaft (see Figure 10). Do not install bolts vet.





29. Install the Motor Shaft and Sensor Guide onto the bolt and insert into the white box.

^ Install Motor Shaft onto the bolt for the opposite side. Then install the bolt. Leave both bolts finger tight for now.





30. Install both Tilt Bracket bolts with Collars and tighten to: 18.5 Nm (1.9kgm, 14ft lbs). See Figure 12.

31. Tighten bolts that secure the "White Box" Sensor Guide and Motor Shaft to: 18.5Nm (1.9kgm, 14ft lbs).





32. Install the Tilt Spring back on to the Bracket using a flat blade screwdriver (see Figure 13).

^ Confirm the ends of the spring fit into the slots properly.





33. Install the Tilt Sensor Tab into the hole in the Sensor Guide (see Figure 14).





34. Install the Tilt Sensor onto the Tilt Motor using 2 screws with washers (see Figure 15).

^ Tighten screws to: 1.2Nm (12kgm, 11 ft lbs).





35. Install the Harness Bracket with one screw no washer (see Figure 16).





36. Install the Cross Bracket onto the Steering Column Assembly.

^ Use a pair of pliers to snap the bracket in place.

37. Re-install the Steering Column Assembly in the reverse order of removal.

^ Refer to PS-12 "Removal and Installation" (in the ESM) for tightening torques.

^ Do not re-use any non-reusable parts.

38. Check wheel alignment. Refer to FSU-6 "Wheel Alignment Inspection" in the ESM.

39. After adjusting the wheel alignment adjust the neutral position of the Steering Angle Sensor. Refer to BRC-6 "Adjustment of Steering Angle Sensor Neutral Position" in the ESM.

40. Re-connect the negative battery cable.

41. Check the function/operating range of the tilt and telescoping motors.





^ The range of operation is shown in Figure 18.

42. Check the steering wheel operation.

^ Make sure the steering wheel turns smoothly all the way to the left and all the way to the right.

43. Reprogram all radio station presets.
