Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

Step 2

Step 2: Install and "Index" the New Front Brake Rotors.

NOTE:
If new front brake rotors are not available, go to Step 3.

A. Remove both front brake caliper assemblies.

Refer to section BR in the ESM for brake caliper assembly removal.

B. Remove and discard both old front brake rotors.

C. Install and Index the new front rotors to the hub.

^ New rotors are listed in the Parts Information.

^ See Rotor Indexing.

D. Check the front rotor runout with the road wheels mounted on the vehicle as follows:

1. Make sure each brake caliper assembly is placed out of the way of the rotor wheel and tire. Make sure they are secure so they won't fall while you're working on the vehicle.

2. Make sure the rotors are fully contacting the hubs. Check the rotor-to-hub surfaces. Clean off all rust dirt or other debris.

NOTE:
For cleaning the hub surface specifically around the wheel studs it is recommended to use the Wheel Hub Cleaning Kit # J-42450-A which can be ordered from Nissan TECH-MATE.

3. Install the front wheels and tires on the vehicle.

^ Tighten lug nuts to 133 Nm (14 kg.m, 98 ft.lb) with a Torque Wrench.

^ Do Not tighten the wheel lug nuts with an air impact wrench.

^ If you apply uneven or high torque to the lugs it may distort (warp) the brake rotor and hub. This could cause increased rotor runout.

4. Mount a dial indicator so it contacts the rotor in the area where the brake caliper mounts as shown in Figure 1a.

Maximum runout when checking in this manner: 0.05 mm (0.002 in)

^ If runout is 0.05 mm (0.002 in) or less remove the wheel and tire and go to Step 4 (Clean and Inspect the Cylinder Body).

Runout must not be more than 0.05 mm (0.002 in)

Rotor Indexing

When installing a new rotor use the following indexing procedure. Indexing helps ensure a minimum amount of rotor runout ("lateral" or side-to-side movement as it's rotating).

A. Make sure the rotor is fully contacting the hub. Check the rotor-to-hub surface. Clean off all rust dirt or other debris.

NOTE:
For cleaning the hub surface specifically around the wheel studs it is recommended to use the Wheel Hub Cleaning Kit # J-42450-A which can be ordered from Nissan TECH-MATE.

B. Install the rotor and all lug nuts. Tighten the lug nuts to 40 ft-lbs (for this indexing process only).

^ Make sure you use open-ended lug nuts.

C. Place a reference mark on the rotor and hub (see Figure A).

D. Measure rotor runout with a dial indicator (see Figure B).

^ If the runout is below 0.03 mm (0.001 in) you're finished with the indexing procedure.

^ If the runout is above 0.03 mm (0.001 in) continue with step E below.

E. Remove the lug nuts and shift the position of the rotor one lug clockwise then reinstall the lug nuts and torque to 40 ft-lbs. (again for this indexing process only).

^ Repeat steps D and E above until the rotor is positioned with the least amount of runout.
