FRONT PASSENGER SEAT BACK VIBRATION AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS WHILE UNOCCUPIED

The front passenger seat back vibrates at highway speeds while unoccupied.

ACTIONS

^ Remove the seat back board.

^ Apply foam tape to damper sides then install mass (vibration) damper.

^ Cut the J-clip located on the seat back to assure free movement of the mass damper. Re-assemble the vehicle.

The purpose of ACTIONS (above) is to give you a quick idea of the work you will be performing. You MUST closely follow the entire Service Procedure as it contains information that is essential to successfully completing the repair.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

IMPORTANT:
Follow all cautions, warnings, and notes in the Electronic Service Manual (ESM) when working on or near a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), such as an airbag.

1. Move / adjust the front passenger seat bottom and seat back to the full forward position.

2. Remove the front passenger hard seat back board as follows:

NOTE:
The seat back board is held on with:





^ 2 top tabs

^ 2 side tabs

^ 2 bottom clips (do not reuse - replace with new clips listed in the Parts Information table).





a. Lift up and pull bottom of seat back board away from seat back. See Figure 2.

NOTE:
A trim tool can be used to assist in the removal of the 2 bottom clips.

b. Lift the middle part of the seat back board up and pull away from the seat back.

c. Lift the top part of the seat back board and pull away from the seat back.





3. Pull J-clip down and up to unhook it from the seat back frame.

4. Install damper:

a. Cut 2 pieces of foam tape 10 mm (0.39 inch) wide and 55 mm (2.16 inch) long. Refer to the Parts Information table for foam tape part number.





b. Wrap foam tape around the damper side as shown in Figure 4.

c. Repeat for the other side.

d. Slide damper into seat back frame and align holes on the seat back frame with the holes located on the damper.





e. Install 2 screws. This will attach the damper to the seat back frame

NOTE:
Before tightening screws make sure the damper is in the full upward position.

Torque 10 Nm (1.01 kg-m 7.37 ft.lb)

5. Place J-clip onto seat back frame.








6. Make 2 cuts approximately 38 mm (1.5 inch) in from each end of the J-clip and then cut across horizontally 125 mm (4.92 inch) connecting the 2 vertical cuts. See Figures 6 and 7. (Continue below.)

7. Install seat back board:

a. Starting at the top place tabs underneath seat back frame and apply pressure until it is securely in place.

b. Install 2 new clips on the bottom part of the seat back board then align bottom clips with holes in seat back frame until it clicks into place. See Parts Information table.

c. Apply pressure to both sides of the seat back board until the tabs click into place.
