Engine: Service and Repair


1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove hood, battery and air cleaner assembly.
3. Drain cooling system by removing under cover and opening drain plugs on radiator and cylinder block.
4. Remove air cleaner assembly.
5. Disconnect upper radiator hose at engine, then remove fan and shroud and disconnect lower radiator hose at engine.
6. Remove radiator grille, then radiator.
7. Disconnect accelerator cable from injection pump.
8. If equipped with A/C, disconnect compressor control cable.
9. Disconnect fuel lines from injection pump, battery ground cable from engine, transmission wiring, vacuum hose from fast idle actuator, connector at fuel cut solenoid, sensing resistor connector, thermoswitch connector and A/C compressor connector.
10. Disconnect heater hoses at dash panel, power brake vacuum hose at pump and alternator wiring at connector.
11. Disconnect exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold, then remove exhaust pipe bracket from engine backing plate.
12. Disconnect wiring from starter motor.
13. Slide gear shift lever boot upwards, then remove retaining bolts and lever.
14. Disconnect speedometer cable and ground cable from transmission, then remove propeller shaft.
15. Remove return spring from clutch fork, then disconnect clutch cable from fork and pull it out through stiffener plate.
16. Remove the two brackets to transmission rear mount bolts and nuts.
17. Raise engine and transmission as necessary, then remove the 4 crossmember to frame bracket bolts.
18. Remove rear mounting nuts from transmission rear extension, then disconnect electrical connectors at CRS switch and back-up lamp switch.
19. Raise engine slightly, then remove engine mounting nuts and bolts.
20. Carefully remove engine using a suitable hoist.
21. Reverse procedure to install.
