Owner Letter
Dear ISUZU Trooper or Trooper II Owner:This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. The Office of Defects Investigation of the National Highway Traffic Safety Agency (NHTSA) believes that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 1984-87 ISUZU Trooper vehicles.
WHAT IS THE DEFECT?
Vehicles that have been primarily operated in the salt belt states (where corrosive salt rock is used extensively to aid in snow and ice control) may have accumulated corrosion in the tailgate door hinges. If such vehicles also have misaligned door latches and strikers, it is possible that when the tailgate doors are closed, a so-called "false latch" condition may be experienced, giving the impression that the door is properly latched when it is not. This could lead to passengers and/or cargo falling from the tailgate doors, which can open without prior warning.
The repair includes an inspection of the tailgate door latches and strikers for correct alignment and repair if necessary; also inspection of the tailgate door hinges for corrosion and repair/replacement, if necessary. This recall will be conducted in the salt belt states.
WHAT YOU SHOULD DO?
Please make an appointment with your authorized ISUZU Dealer, who will repair the tailgate door hinges. It will take approximately 3 hours to complete, or longer if extensive repairs are required. This service will be performed free of charge. Please ask your Dealer if additional time will be needed to schedule and/or repair your vehicle. Have your Dealer refer to Campaign Bulletin SB92-11-015.
After the Dealer has performed this service, a Hinge Lubrication Label will be affixed to the tailgate door sill. It is important to follow the lubrication instructions on the label to assure continued smooth tailgate door hinge operation.
