SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Perform the following steps as described in the 1986 P'UP (KB) Workshop Manual:
a. Remove the fuel filter assembly from its bracket.
b. Disconnect the fuel inlet and return hoses from the fuel injection pump.
c. Remove the accelerator pedal control cable from the fuel injection pump.

Fuel Adjustment Screw Assembly Location:

2. Cut and remove the sealing wire from the full load fuel adjustment screw and locknut (Figure 1).

3. Hold the full load fuel adjustment screw with a screwdriver to keep it from turning. Using a thin 1/2" open-end wrench, loosen the locknut slightly and tighten it to about 0.8 kg-m (6.0 ft.lbs.).

CAUTION Allowing the full load fuel adjustment screw to turn at this point in the procedure will result in loss of power and decreased exhaust emissions.

Washer/Nut:

4. Install the nut (part No. 9-09844-574-0) onto the full load fuel adjustment screw (Figure 2). Without allowing the adjustment screw or locknut to turn, torque the nut to 0.8 kg-m (6.0 ft.lbs.). Use a 12 mm deep socket, 1/4" drive torque wrench and extensions as necessary.

5. Hold the hill load fuel adjustment screw with a screwdriver to keep it from turning. Hold the nut (installed in step 4) with a thin 1/2" open-end wrench to keep it from turning. Using a thin 1/2" open-end wrench, turn the locknut counterclockwise to about 2.2 kg-m (15 ft.lbs.) to make sure it is snug against the new nut.

Clearance:

6. Using the thin 1/2" open-end wrench, loosen the locknut 1-2 turns. The adjustment screw should turn with the locknut to create a gap between the injection pump housing and the plain washer (Figure 3).

Shim:

7. Insert the shim (part No. 8-94462-362-0) between the injection pump housing and the plain washer (Figure 4).

8. Using a 12 mm deep socket, 1/4" drive torque wrench and extensions as needed, torque the nut (installed in step 4) to 0.7-0.9 kg-m (5.1-6.5 ft.lbs.). The adjustment screw and double nuts will turn to close the gap between the injection pump housing, shim and plain washer.

Sealing Paint:

9. Leave the nut (installed in step 4) in place on the vehicle to secure this new adjustment position. Apply red sealing paint across the pump body, shim, double nuts and adjustment screw as shown in Figure 5.

10. Perform the following steps as described in the 1986 P'UP (KB) Workshop Manual:
a. Install the accelerator pedal control cable to the injection pump.
b. Install the fuel inlet and return hoses to the injection pump.
c. Install the fuel filter assembly to its bracket.
Dear California 1986 Isuzu P'UP (Diesel) Owner:

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the California Health and Safety Code. The California Air Resources Board has determined that your vehicle's engine may be releasing air pollutants which exceed California Standards. These standards were established to protect your health and welfare from the dangers of air pollution.

This defect will be remedied by an authorized Isuzu dealer at no expense to you, the owner.

Eligibility will not be denied solely on the basis that you used parts other than original equipment, or had repairs performed by outlets other than authorized Isuzu dealers.

The correction to your Isuzu diesel P'UP will consist of adding a shim at the full load fuel adjustment screw on the fuel injection pump.

There will be no noticeable adverse impact on fuel economy, driveability or performance that will result from the recall repair. If the defect is not repaired the engine may fail an emission inspection test, when such tests are required under State law.

Please contact any Isuzu dealer after November 7, 1986 for an appointment to have the correction made at the earliest possible time. The estimated time required to effect the repair should not exceed .30 minutes.

In order to ensure your full protection under the emission warranty made applicable to your vehicle by State or Federal law, and your right to participate in future recalls, it is recommended that you have your vehicle serviced as soon as possible. Failure to do so could legally be determined to be a lack of proper maintenance of your vehicle.

We are, indeed, sorry for any inconvenience and appreciate your cooperation in having this correction to your Isuzu completed as soon as possible.

IMPORTANT: If you have sold your vehicle, please enter the new owner's name and address, if known, on the enclosed "Change of Information" postcard and drop it in the mail. Postage has already been paid.
