Timing Belt: Service and Repair

Refer to Fig. 14 for removal and installation of timing belt.
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.

2. Align crankshaft timing pulley and camshaft timing pulley, Figs. 19 & 20.
3. Remove tension spring.

4. Loosen bolt ``B'', then draw tension pulley toward water pump side, Fig. 18.
5. Remove timing belt.
6. Install tension spring, and temporarily tighten bolt ``B'', Fig. 18.
7. Install timing belt and loosen bolt ``B'' to allow tension spring to tighten belt. Ensure marks on gears are still properly aligned.
8. Temporarily tighten bolt ``B'', then turn crankshaft two revolutions in the opposite direction of normal rotation. Ensure that matchmarks are aligned.
9. Loosen bolt ``B'' and tighten belt with tension pulley, then torque bolt ``B'' to 14 ft. lbs.
10. Install timing belt cover and torque to 6 ft. lbs.
