SERVICE INFORMATION

The fuel pressure measurement and crankshaft bearing selection procedures are incorrectly specified in the following Workshop Manual. The correct procedures are printed in this Service Bulletin.

FUEL PRESSURE

Connecting Fuel Pressure Gauge
1. Connect a fuel pressure gauge.
Fuel Pressure Gauge J-35957-1
Fuel Rail Access Filling J-35957-2

Nots:

The fuel line is still under pressure. When pulling out the fuel hose, cover up the joint with a rag to prevent gasoline from spraying.

2. Disconnect the V.S.V. harness at connector.

Measurement

Start the engine and measure fuel pressures at idling.
1. Disconnect the vacuum hose from the pressure regulator and plug it.

Fuel Pressure kg/cm2(psi)

Standard About 3.0 (42)

2. Reconnect the vacuum hose to the pressure regulator

Fuel Pressure kg/cm2(psi)

Standard About 2.5 (35)

3. Apply battery voltage to the V.S.V. connector.
Fuel Pressure kg/cm2(psi)
Standard About 3.0 (42)
4. Disconnect the vacuum hose from the pressure regulator and plug it. Stop engine to check for fuel leakage and make sure that fuel pressure remains above 2.5 kg/cm2 (35 psi) for 4 min. after engine is turned off.

Note:
The following method can be used to operate the fuel pump without running the engine.
1. Remove the fuel pump relay from the fuse and relay box.

2. Using a sub-wire short terminals (1) (1.25BY) and (3) (1.258L) of the connector with wire.
Fuel Pressure kg/cm' (psi)
Standard About 3.0 (42)

Inspection

When Fuel Pressure Does Not Reach Standard Level Check fuel pressure with battery voltage applied directly to the fuel pump using jumper cables.
1. If fuel pressure reaches normal level:
0. Check fuel pump circuit and correct as necessary.
0. Fuel pump relay may be defective.

2. If fuel pressure remains unchanged:
0 Restrictions in hose on intake side of fuel pump, Clean (Restrictions in intake hose may cause abnormal vibrations of the hose). 0 Pressure regulator defective, replace. 0 Fuel pump malfunctioning, replace.

Crankshaft Bearing Selection Bearing Combinations (Reference)

Connecting Rod Bearing Inside Diameter
1. Install the bearing to the connecting rod big end.
2. Tighten the bearing cap to the specified torque. Connecting Rod Bearing Cap Bolt
Torque kg.m(lb.ft/N.m)
. 6.0-0.2 (43.3-1.4/58.9-20)

3. Use an inside dial indicator to measure the connecting rod bearing inside diameter.

Crankpin and Bearing Clearance If the clearance between the bearing inside diameter and the crankpin is greater than the standard but less than the limit, the crankshaft is serviceable. If the clearance exceeds the limit, the crankshaft must either be reground or replaced. If the crankshaft is reground, undersize bearings must also be installed.
