Headliner - Shrinkage/Pulling Away From Window

SERVICE INFORMATION

Sudden changes in ambient temperature may, in some affected vehicles, cause the headliner to shrink and pull away from the top of the rear side window.

This Service Bulletin describes the procedure for repairing the headliner, using a headliner repair kit consisting of headliner patch material, clips and double-sided tape.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Remove rear side window as described in the appropriate Workshop Manual.

NOTE

Be careful not to remove black sealant from around edges of window opening when removing window from vehicle. Replace sealant (part no. 8-94496-172-0) if damaged.

2. Remove headliner clips from area to be repaired.

3. Removedouble-sided tape from around outer edge of window opening at area to be repaired.

4. Pull headliner away from window opening, about 3 inches beyond each side of the area to be repaired.
5. Cut a patch from headliner material provided in kit. Width of patch should be 3 inches. Length of patch should be same as length of area requiring repair.

6. If repairing headliner at comer of window, cut an approximate 3 inch square headliner patch for the comer

7. Install 2 strips of double-sided tape along edge of headliner patch (on side of patch that will face the inside of the vehicle), as shown in Figure 1.

8. Install a strip of double-sided tape to outer edge of window opening.

9. Install patch to edge of headliner, firmly adhering tape. See Figure 2.

10. Stretch headliner and patch over window opening. Headliner should be stretched to the edge of the window opening.

11. Make a cut approximately halfway down the center of the corner patch, for ease of installation (Figure 2).

12. Press patch firmly to tape on outer edge of window opening.

NOTE

Be careful to avoid forming wrinkles when stretching headliner

13. Install a new clip at each end of patch, and at about every 4 inches along repaired area (Figure 3). Use a plastic hammer to secure clips to window opening.

NOTE Install clips with lip facing inside vehicle (Figure 3).

14. Trim excess patch material from around window opening, just above top edge of clips.

15. Install a strip of double-sided tape to edge of window opening, over patch and clips.

16. Reinstall window as described in the appropriate Workshop Manual.
