Trooper II (KT) models equipped with V6 engine and air conditioning.

SERVICE INFORMATION

Some affected vehicles may experience a squeaking noise coming from the serpentine belt, caused by belt misalignment between the air conditioning compressor and the belt idler pulley. Belt misalignment causes the belt to rub against the inner edge of the air conditioning pulley grooves, resulting in a squeaking noise.
To eliminate the squeaking noise, follow the procedure described in this Service Bulletin for installing a shim between the compressor mounting bracket and the cylinder head.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Be sure the ignition key is in the "OFF" position.

Figure 1:

2. Loosen the serpentine belt by rotating the belt tensioner counterclockwise. Remove the belt from under the idler pulley (Figure 1).

3. Loosen the three air conditioner compressor bracket mounting bolts.

4. Loosen the two 12 mm fasteners securing the two support brackets at the rear of the air conditioner compressor.

5. Install a 1/32 inch (.16 mm) shim (see "Parts Information" below) between the compressor bracket and cylinder head (Figure 2).

NOTE Be sure the shim is properly positioned so that the shim tab does not contact the intake manifold.

6. Torque the three compressor bracket mounting bolts to 30 - 44 ft.lbs.

7. Torque the two 12 nun fasteners at the rear of the compressor to 50 - 55 ft.lbs.
8. Reinstall the serpentine belt under the idler pulley.

9. Reconnect negative battery cable.

10. Test drive the vehicle to ensure the squeaking noise is eliminated. If necessary, install an additional shim beside the first shim, using the above procedure.
