Automatic Locking Hub Installation

Front Drive Axle Assembly:

Installation steps:
1. Washer (Item Number 6 in image)
2. Front drive axle assembly (Item number 5 in image)
3. Washer (Item number 4 in image)
4. Nut and Bolt (Item number 3 in image)
5. Propeller Shaft (Item number 2 in image)
6. Assembly of hub and disc, back plate, knuckle, knuckle arm, and lower end (Item number 1 in image)

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

1. After assembling axle shafts onto front differential, place front drive axle onto a floor jack and raise the axle, then align the bolt holes for the differential to the frame and torque the four nuts to 148 Nm (112.1 ft lb).
2. Install front drive shaft, being sure to align with the mark made during removal procedure.
3. Install engine under cover.
4. Install steering knuckle and control arm assemblies.
5. Install steering linkage assembly, then attach tie rod ends to steering knuckles.
6. Check fluid level for front differential and add as necessary.
7. Continue installation of hub assembly with procedure below:

Reassembly Sequence:

Reassembly steps:

1. Wheel pin
2. Bolt
3. Inner bearing & inner race
4. Outer bearing & outer race
5. Oil seal
6. Hub and disc assembly
7. Hub nut
8. Lock washer
9. Inner cam
10. Drive clutch assembly
11. Snap ring and shim
12. Housing assembly
13. hub cap
14. Washer and bolt

NOTES: 1. Place the hub on a wood workbench or a block of wood approximately 6" x 6" to protect the wheel stud ends and threads. Insert a when stud using a hammer. Be sure the wheel stud is started squarely and seats completely.
2. Align scribe marks and attach the hub to the disc. Torque the bolts to 101 Nm (75.9 ft lb); (Step 2, see image).

3. Place the inner bearing onto the inner race in the hub and install a new oil seal and retaining ring (Step 5; see image).

4. Put grease in the hub, then apply grease to the inner and outer bearings (Step 6; see image)

5. Turn to the place where there is a chamfer in the tapped hole to the outer side, and attach the nut (Step 7; see image).

Hub Nut Wrench:

6. Using a spring scale, adjust the hub bearing preload at the wheel pin. Preload should be 3.3 lbs. If the oil seal and bearing are new, preload shall be between 4.4-5.5 lbs.

7. Turn the side with the larger diameter of the tapered bore to the vehicle outer side, and attach the washer. If the bolt holes in the lock plate are not aligned with the corresponding holes in the nut, reverse the lock plate. If the bolt holes are still out of alignment, turn in the nut just enough to obtain alignment. Screw is to be fastened tightly so its head may come lower than the surface of the washer.

Lock Washers:

8. Before installing the inner cam (Step 9), shift the transfer lever to the 2H position.
9. Clean the flange surface of the hub, the thread holes, the surface of the lock washer, and the spline portion of the axle shaft (Step 9; see image).

Cleaning Hub Surfaces:

10. Install the inner cam by aligning the keyway of the inner cam with the groove of the knuckle (See image). The cam gear must be facing out.

Installing Inner Cam:

11. If it is difficult to install the inner cam, use the installer tool (Isuzu part # J-38194) and a plastic hammer or equivalent. Use the hammer to tap lightly around the special tool 'A' surface as shown in the image below. DO NOT strike the inner cam gear teeth with the plastic hammer.

Using Special Tool For Installation Of Cam:

12. Lower vehicle from hoist. Support lower link with floor jack, placing axle in normal horizontal condition (Step 12-Shim Selection; see image).
13. After installation of the shims and snap ring, check the fitting condition of the snap ring.
14. Apply Loctite 515 or equivalent to the flange surface of the housing assembly (Step 12; see image). Make sure that the housing assembly turns smoothly. If it turns smoothly, the spacer selected is correct. Be sure to attach the spring washer.
15. Tighten housing assembly bolts to 59 Nm (43.4 ft lb).
16. Install Tire/wheels, and torque lug nuts to 58-87 ft lb for steel wheels, and 80-94 ft lb for aluminum wheels.
