Timing Chain: Service and Repair

1. Remove front cover, Service and Repair

Timing Chain And Sprocket Alignment:





2. Place No. 1 or No. 4 piston at top dead center with marks on camshaft and crankshaft sprockets aligned.

Crankshaft Sprocket Removal:





3. Remove camshaft sprocket bolts, then remove sprocket and timing chain. If sprocket does not come off easily, use specially designed sprocket puller to remove.

Crankshaft Sprocket Installation:





4. Install crankshaft sprocket on crankshaft, if necessary use special tool J-5590 and ensure sprocket is seated.

5. Install timing chain on camshaft sprocket. Hold sprocket vertically with chain hanging down and align marks on camshaft and crankshaft sprockets.

6. Align dowel pin hole in sprocket with dowel pin on camshaft, then install sprocket on camshaft.

7. Using camshaft sprocket attaching bolts, draw sprocket on camshaft. Torque bolts to specification.

Torque Value:
17 ftlb (23 Nm)

8. Lubricate timing chain with engine oil, then install front cover as outlined previously.
