Idle Speed/Throttle Actuator - Electronic: Service and Repair
IAC Valve:
IMPORTANT PRECAUTIONS!
On IAC valves that have been in service, do not push or pull on the valve pintle. the force required to move the pintle may damage the worm gear drive.
Do not soak the valve in cleaning solvent.
SERVICE INSTRUCTIONS
Both original and replacement IAC valve have thread locking compound on the threads. If the valve removed is being reinstalled do not attempt to remove the thread locking compound.
Installation procedure differs between new and original valve.
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
- Negative battery cable.
- Air cleaner assembly.
- IAC valve connector.
- IAC valve.
CLEAN AND INSPECT
- Clean IAC gasket sealing surfaces, pintle valve seat and air passage.
- Use a spray type carburetor cleaner to remove carbon deposits. DO NOT USE A CLEANER THAT CONTAINS METHYL ETHYL KETONE.
- Shiny spots on the pintle or seat are normal and do not indicate a bent or damaged pintle shaft.
- If air passage has excessive deposits, remove TBI unit for complete cleaning.
INSTALLING NEW VALVE
- Measure disatance between tip of pintle and gasket surface (A). If greater than 28 mm, use finger pressure to slowly retract pintle. The force required will not damage worm drive.
- Valve into TBI unit.
- Torque to 18 Nm (13 ft lb).
- Connect IAC connector.
- Air cleaner.
- Negative battery cable.
- Reset IAC valve position:
- Depress accelerator pedal slightly.
- Start and run engine for 5 seconds.
- Turn engine OFF for 10 seconds.
- Restart engine.
INSTALLING ORIGINAL VALVE
- Valve into TBI unit.
- Torque to 18 Nm (13 ft lb).
- Connect IAC connector.
- Air cleaner.
- Negative battery cable.
- Reset IAC valve position:
- Depress accelerator pedal slightly.
- Start and run engine for 5 seconds.
- Turn engine OFF for 10 seconds.
- Restart engine.
