Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

Code 29

CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
The torque converter clutch solenoid is a simple ON/OFF solenoid connected to the adapter case valve body. When the solenoid is energized by the TCM, it opens a fluid port. When the port is open, line pressure actuates the converter clutch control valve which engages the torque converter clutch by exhausting the fluid. The TOM engages the torque converter clutch only when all of the following conditions exist:
- The transmission is at operating temperature.
- The brake pedal is released.
- The transmission is operating in third or fourth gear.
- The engine is at operating temperature.

TEST DESCRIPTION
Numbers below refer to circled numbers on the diagnostic chart.
1. This test determines if the solenoid windings or the wire to the solenoid are shorted together.
2. This test isolates the short circuit.

DIAGNOSTIC AIDS
Trouble Code 29 sets when the TCM detects a short to ground at terminal 38. In the event of an electrical failure, the torque converter clutch is released (de-energized).
