Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

Code 32

CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
The force motor solenoid is a variable position solenoid whose plunger moves in relation to the current received from the TCM. The TCM uses the force motor solenoid to control line pressure. By changing the line pressure, the TCM controls gear shifts. The TCM determines the proper gear by using electronic inputs to read engine load, engine speed, and vehicle speed. As operating conditions change, the TCM changes the plunger's position by varying the amount of current (amperage) sent through the solenoid.

Line pressure can vary from less than 50 psi to more than 200 psi. The line pressure varies inversely to the amount of current. High current causes low pressure and low current causes high pressure.

TEST DESCRIPTION
Numbers below refer to circled numbers on the diagnostic chart.
1. This test determines if the solenoid windings or wires to the solenoid are open.
2. This test determines if the wiring or the solenoid is shorted.
3. This test isolates the open circuit.

DIAGNOSTIC AIDS
Trouble Code 32 sets when the TCM detects a current draw less than 95 milliamps (0.095 amps) between terminals 40 and 41. In the event of an electrical failure, the force motor solenoid is turned off, allowing maximum fluid pressure.
