Code 36
CIRCUIT DESCRIPTIONThe torque converter clutch solenoid is a simple ON/OFF solenoid connected to the adapter case valve body. When the solenoid is energized by the TCM, it opens a fluid port. When the port is open, line pressure actuates the converter clutch control valve which engages the torque converter clutch by exhausting the fluid. The TCM engages the torque converter clutch only when all of the following conditions exist:
- The transmission is at operating temperature.
- The brake pedal is released.
- The transmission is operating in third or fourth gear.
- The engine is at operating temperature.
TEST DESCRIPTION
Numbers below refer to circled numbers on the diagnostic chart.
1. This test checks the continuity of the solenoid windings and the wires to the solenoid.
2. This test checks for a short to voltage at terminal 38 of the TCM connector.
3. The wire from terminal 38 of the TCM connector may be shorted to a supply wire of another solenoid at the adapter case connector.
4. The wire at terminal 4 (A) of the adapter case connector may be shorted to a supply wire of another solenoid.
DIAGNOSTIC AIDS
Trouble Code 36 sets when the TCM detects an open or a short to voltage at terminal 38. In the event of an electrical failure, the converter clutch solenoid is de-energized.
