Troubleshooting
Spark Does Not Occur1. Inspect ignition coil high tension cable. If cable is unsatisfactory, repair or replace. If cable is satisfactory, proceed to step 2.
2. Inspect spark plugs. If spark plugs are unsatisfactory, repair or replace. If spark plug is satisfactory, proceed to step 3.
3. Inspect igniter. If igniter lead wire to distributor is broken, replace wire. If igniter is satisfactory, proceed to step 4.
4. Inspect distributor. If primary side lead wire is broken or grounded, repair or replace. If cap or rotor is poorly insulated, replace as required. If distributor is satisfactory, proceed to step 5.
5. Inspect ignition coil. If coil assembly is opened or shorted, replace coil assembly. If primary coil lead is broken, repair or replace.
Spark Occurs Irregularly Or Jumps Across Gap Of Only .04--.08 Inch
1. Inspect ignition coil. If coil layers are shorted, repair or replace as required.
Spark Jumps Across Gap Of .2 Inch Or More
1. Inspect spark plug for excessive gap, broken porcelain insulator, worn electrodes or fouling. Repair or replace as required.
Engine Misfires Regularly
1. Inspect distributor. If cap or rotor is cracked, replace. If distributor shaft is loose, correct as necessary. If lead wire is broken, replace wire. If distributor is satisfactory, proceed to step 2.
2. Inspect ignition coil high tension cable. If primary lead wire is broken or coil is shorted, repair or replace as required. If coil high tension cable is satisfactory, proceed to step 3.
3. Inspect spark plugs. If carbon fouling is present, clean or install hotter type plug. If insulator is cracked, replace plug.
Engine Knocks Regularly
1. Check ignition timing. If timing is too advanced, adjust as necessary. If timing is satisfactory, proceed to step 2.
2. Inspect spark plug. If plug is running too hot, install colder type spark plug. If plug is satisfactory, proceed to step 3.
3. Inspect distributor. If governor spring is unhooked or broken, repair or replace. If pin hole in governor is worn, replace governor.
Engine Lacks Power
1. Check ignition timing. If timing is not within specifications, adjust as necessary. If timing is satisfactory, proceed to step 2.
2. Inspect spark plugs. If plugs are not satisfactory, replace as needed. If plugs are satisfactory, proceed to step 3.
3. Inspect distributor. If governor is not satisfactory, replace governor.
