RODEO (UC), TROOPER (UX) AND AMIGO (TC) IGNITION KEY DIFFICULT TO REMOVE

AFFECTED VEHICLES

1992 Trooper (UX), Rodeo (UC) and Amigo (TC) models equipped with automatic transmission and shift inter-lock.

SERVICE INFORMATION

On some affected vehicles, the ignition key may be difficult to remove due to shift lever lens interference with the shift lock cable.

To provide easier ignition key removal, this Service Bulletin describes how to modify the shift lever lens to eliminate interference with the shift lock cable.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

Remove a small area of plastic from the bottom of the shift lever lens as follows. Refer to Figure 1.

1. Remove the front console, shift knob and shift lever lens as described in the appropriate Workshop Manual.

2. Using a hand grinder or file, remove a small portion of plastic (approximately 1/8 inch deep x 1 inch wide) from the bottom of the shift lever lens at the location indicated in Figure 1.

3. Reinstall the shift lever lens and shift knob as described in the appropriate Workshop Manual.

4. Check for proper shift inter-lock operation, which must be as follows:

a. The shift lever cannot be moved out of "P" (Park) with the ignition key in "LOCK" position.

b. The shift lever can be moved out of "P" with the ignition key in "ON" position only when the brake pedal is pressed.

c. The ignition key can be turned to "LOCK" position only when the shift lever is in "P".

5. If the conditions described in a. and c. above are not met, refer to Service Bulletin SB92-05-009, "Shift Lock Cable Adjustment".

6. If the condition described in b. above is not met, check the shift inter-lock solenoid connections and the brake pedal switch.

7. Reinstall the front console as described in the appropriate Workshop Manual.
