Transfer Case: Description and Operation

A transfer case is used when it is necessary to direct power to both front and rear axles. Transfer case units also provide a means of disconnecting one driven axle for economy and can be used to supply additional gear reduction for adverse driving conditions.

A floor mounted shift lever is used to select the operating range. When four wheel drive has been selected, the four wheel drive indicator light is designed to come on when the front axle has been engaged.
