Ignition Timing: Adjustments

The ignition timing and engine idling speed must be checked and adjusted with the engine running under the following conditions.
- Engine must be thoroughly warmed up.
- Throttle must be completely closed and idle contact on.
- Keep front wheels straight ahead, if equipped with power steering.
- Air conditioner turned off (if so equipped)
- Engage parking brake.
- Place transmission in neutral.
- Automatic transmission in either "N" or "P" range

1. Apply the parking brake and start the engine.
2. Set the select lever to NEUTRAL position.
3. Make idle speed adjustment at normal operating temperature.

Idle speed rpm: 900

4. Make sure that the air conditioner switch is "OFF".

5. Evaporative emission canister purge line and EGR vacuum line disconnected and plugged.
6. Connect the timing light lead to the No. 1 spark plug wire.

Timing Mark:

7. Aim the timing light at the crankshaft pulley notched line.

Ignition timing: 12° @ 900 rpm

8. If out of specification, loosen the mounting bolt on the distributor, turn the distributor clockwise or counterclockwise to adjust the timing. After adjustment, tighten the belt to the specified torque.

Torque: 19 N m (14 lb.ft.)

NOTE:
- When tightening the distributor mounting bolt, ensure that the distributor-body does not rotate together with the mounting bolt.

9. Unplug and reconnect all vacuum lines when all adjustments are complete.
