AFFECTED VEHICLES
1994 Trooper (UX) models equipped with automatic transmission before VIN R7904287.
SERVICE INFORMATION
On some affected vehicles, some false diagnostic trouble codes may be set in the transmission control module (TCM) under certain conditions. This condition can be eliminated by installing a new, improved MEM-CAL listed in the "Parts Information" section of this Service Bulletin.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
If Tech-1 scan tool readings indicate that diagnostic trouble code 11, 53, 61 or 51 (or a combination of these codes) is set in the TCM:
1. Check the TCM housing to see if blue line is present on the connector side of the TCM housing. On SOHC models, check for a blue line on the bottom. On DOHC models, check for a blue line on both top and bottom. See Figure 1.
a. If blue line is present, it indicates that the new MEM-CAL has already been installed. Do not continue with this Service Procedure. Refer to the appropriate Workshop Manual for A/T diagnostic troubleshooting procedures for the trouble code(s) set in the TCM.
b. If blue line is NOT present:
^ Disconnect and remove the TCM. Remove the MEM-CAL from the TCM.
^ Install the new MEM-CAL listed in the "Parts Information" section of this Service Bulletin. Refer to the MEM-CAL replacement procedure described in the appropriate Workshop Manual.
^ Using a permanent marker, draw a blue line on the bottom of the connector side of the TCM housing. On DOHC models, also draw a blue line on the top. Refer to Figure 1.
^ Remove TCM bracket. Install the new TCM identification label (provided with new MEM-CAL) over the old label, as shown in Figure 1. Reinstall bracket.
^ Reinstall the TCM.
2. Reconnect the Tech-1 and verify that TCM trouble codes have been cleared.
