Circuit Description
the exhaust gas recirculation valve operation is engine control module controlled. The engine control module will ground the vacuum switch valve to turn the exhaust gas recirculation valve "ON" and "OFF". An exhaust gas recirculation back pressure transducer determines how long the exhaust gas recirculation valve stays "ON" based on exhaust back pressure supplied to the Transducer thorough tube "S".
The engine control module monitors the integrator to determine if the exhaust gas recirculation system is functioning. The engine control module will command the exhaust gas recirculation valve "OFF" briefly when the exhaust gas recirculation is supposed to be "ON", the Integrator will change at least three (3) counts indicating the exhaust gas recirculation valve did "close" when commanded. The engine control module will then recheck the system again by commanding the exhaust gas recirculation valve "ON" when it should not be "ON" and again monitors the integrator for at least three (3) counts change indicating the exhaust gas recirculation valve did come "ON" when commanded. If the exhaust gas recirculation system fails this test five (5) times a malfunction diagnostic trouble code 32 will be logged and the malfunction indicator lamp will be "ON".
Test Description
The number(s) below refer to circled the number(s) on the diagnostic chart.
1. Checks the exhaust gas recirculation valve will open and exhaust gas recirculation passage is not restricted.
2. Check that exhaust gas recirculation valve vacuum switch valve is operating properly.
3. Checks the exhaust gas recirculation Back Pressure Transducer operation.
4. Test voltage source as well to exhaust gas recirculation valve vacuum switch valve.
5. Check exhaust gas recirculation back pressure transducer for proper operation.
6. Check operation of engine control module circuit to exhaust gas recirculation valve vacuum switch valve.
NOTE: The exhaust gas recirculation valve chart is a check of the exhaust gas recirculation system. If the exhaust gas recirculation system works properly, check other items that could result in high Block Learn value. The exhaust gas recirculation valve passage being slightly restricted may cause diagnostic trouble code 32 to set.
A sluggish heated oxygen sensor may also cause this diagnostic trouble code to be set falsely.
