Steering Column: Service and Repair

Refer to Fig. 1 for exploded view of steering column assembly. When disassembling the steering column, note bolt, screw and nut type, location and tensile strength. This is usually a letter, number or marking on the bolt head. Do not attempt to replace a bolt, screw or nut with a lesser quality part.




1. Disarm SRS as outlined under Technician Safety Information.
2. Remove SRS coil assembly.

3. Remove snap ring and rubber cushion. Refer to Fig. 16.
4. On models with automatic transmission, disconnect shift lock cable.
5. Disconnect ignition switch electrical connector at base of steering column.
6. Place alignment marks on steering column shaft and flex coupling.
7. Remove flex coupling to steering column shaft bolt.
8. Remove steering column to floor pan bolt.
9. Remove steering column to instrument panel attaching screws.
10. Carefully remove steering column from vehicle.
11. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Tighten attaching bolt to specifications.
b. Arm SRS as outlined under Technician Safety Information.
